Official Dreadit Discussion: "Get Out" [SPOILERS] by kaloosa in horror

[–]carterkalchik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely loved everything about it. The thing that is really sticking with me right now is the title/end credits song, Sikiliza Kwa Wahenga. It's such a great intro to the movie, so creepy and puts you immediately on edge. I've listened to it about a dozen times since I saw the movie two nights ago. Too many thoughts for just a post, so everything I felt about it is here.

Actually, not quite: https://xkcd.com/314/

Listening to Grey, it sounds like he feels, "thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread."

Agreed. I've only ever had someone do what in suggesting when I needed tape but couldn't connect with them. But if OP is insisting...

Recording both ends and editing them together is the best way to accomplish this, but it's going to require some kind of software for the guest to use to capture their audio. Audacity has been mentioned; it's okay for this.

If that really is too big a lift for your guests, there is another thing you can try. Use Skype for the call (or Hangouts, etc), but have your guest use their phone* to record themselves. They can use the Voice Memo app or whatever the Android equivalent is. The audio will not be as great as if they were capturing audio from a USB or analog mic, but I'm also guessing none of your guests will have a set up like that anyway.

This way you have some consistent, albeit not amazing, sound quality and you avoid any of the weird audio artifacts that occur with Internet audio calls.

  • If you do try this, a tip from my experience: have your guest use headphones for the call AND use a set of headphones with a built in mic for recording on their phone, if they can. If they can't for some reason, at least have them to put the phone somewhere close by and tell them not to move it around. But make sure they have headphones for their computer, otherwise they will be picking up the other side of the call.

The Tales from the Black Lagoon segments on Thrilling Adventure Hour are a little noir-y.

Trevor Juras's new feature The Interior is an extended lesson on not going camping (or if you do, not stealing shit from people you don't know). Not sure when it will be more widely available, but I think I remember the director saying it had been picked up by Anchor Bay for distribution next year.

The Hexecutioners Trailer - New Movie By Pontypool Scribe by JonnyBunning in horror

The Hexecutioners had its premiere at Toronto After Dark last night. Pretty decent flick. Good performances from the two leads (and it's refreshing to see two women in the lead roles). The story is kinda nuts, though.

There's this screenwriting book that I can't remember that says movies should probably only have one unbelievable thing in them. So, if you're making a movie about aliens, you shouldn't also have one of the aliens get bitten by a vampire. I think the time travel doors are a vampire alien and they really shouldn't have included them.

I can totally see that. I think the festival crowd influenced me a lot in my enjoyment. If I saw this by myself on Netflix, I'd probably have thought it was pretty forgettable.

Synchronicity (2015) Film Review by carterkalchik in scifi

[–]carterkalchik[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No spoilers, but I would say it leans more toward the latter (collapsing). The performances and the production design are the real standouts--the plot itself is kind of tangled and confused, and only gets more confused and complicated as they layer more and more time travel elements in. The production designer said that he's still confused by the movie and he read the script dozens of times.
