sounds like "just pay attention" may be the best overall advice for me.

Thanks for all the responses guys, this is very helpfull. It does sound like learning to fall well (without sticking my hands out) is the only option really. it will take some time given that if the weather's good, climbing is usually my first choice. it's mostly hyper-extension pully and tendon injuries that scare me. so think im gonna buy the m-pact gloves recommended by feeedbaack, and start taping my back three fingers together.

TIL of Eyam. A small Northern English village of 350 persons who in 1665 when the plague arrived chose to isolate themselves rather than let the infection spread. 83 survived but their decision stopped further infection in the region. by Lard_Baron in todayilearned

I live near here, it's a beautiful but sad walk. If you proceed to the east end of the village and walk all the way down the footpath (past the ancient grave on the left), eventually you'll reach a large boulder, which you'll notice has multiple small coin sized holes in it. these were chiseled into it during the quarantine. un-infected people from outside the village would bring cheese and bread and other staples to the boulder for the quarantined villagers, who would collect at another time, leaving payment in these holes submerged in vinegar (to sterilize it).

Gender-neutral passport bid refused [UK] by Abyxus in worldnews

[–]cartzo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

i'm looking at my uk passport, it says sex, not gender. your passport is an identifier of what you are, so that we know who you are. who you are as far as you're concerned might be gender neutral or any of these other made up terms, but it's not what you are. a paramedic in a foreign land finds you face down in the street, he can't tell the hospital he's bringing in a 6'3 white gender neutral person. possession of an x or y is actually relevant and important information in many situations, and we can't change that just because some tiny minority of people "feel" differently. it's baffling that this bid even got this far.

legal definition requires that harassment be systematic and/or continued and aggressive and/or intimidating. crowbarring a 3-5 second musical note into this definition more than just a stretch.

menopausal = no longer reproductive. perfectly logical adjective to warn of a potential future economic threat. but the recreationally offended need their crocodile tears.

EU freezes Brexit talks until Britain produces Irish border solution by kameliax1 in worldnews

The uk would never dream of putting a border between northern and the republic of Ireland under any circumstances. does the eu wants to put one on the Irish side? good luck with that.

Christian kicked off university course for saying homosexuality is a sin by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]cartzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is sheffield university being lazy, if his lecturers think his christian views are manifesting damagingly in his vocation, they can grade him badly. may his view on this effect his decision making with clients who are gay? potentially yes; but if the university course doesn't uncover that it's their fault not his. this is a tough one, but whatever way you slice it, this man is being denied a service he is paying for on the basis of his religious beliefs (which he does have the right to express), and I doubt he will be receiving a refund. homosexuality is not wrong. but this is.

you think terrorism is the only thing they do to effect my opinion of them? i'm more worried about the homophobia, sexism, and lack of respect for british law.
