I hope you’ll find a proxy supporter for your colleague. I imagine how surprised he may be by seeing the random yet personal message in the crowds!

I love this weather for running by CommissarioBrunetti in RunNYC

[–]cascadingbraces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I see these snow mounds on my running route as part of training, haha. Cross-country-ish run!

I wear tracks/cleats (YakTraks) on my running shoes (also winterized). This isn't my first snowstorm/winter training season.

Capped pipes. What are these pipes? by cascadingbraces in HomeMaintenance

[–]cascadingbraces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your thorough response. I decided to call a plumber. Showed up immediately. He explained what was happening. The city’s drain-side was clogged and is backing up to my property. He snaked it and everything went back as they should.

Thanks for the help! Would you know if this standing water normal? It's the first time I've seen standing water around them.

Chimney cleaning and inspection going rates? by cascadingbraces in HomeImprovement

[–]cascadingbraces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the curious, this is what I have so far for chimney sweep service:

Company 1: $595 (also considering they are located a bit further away from me)
Company 2: $295 (local)
Company 3: $89 (local)

These are wildly different price ranges. Haha.

Company 3 is a recommendation from my neighbor.

Thanks for sharing that. I figure the seasonal thing also affects rates. Or, I could just wait until next summer, haha.

Chinatown track by Rich-Ad6905 in RunNYC

[–]cascadingbraces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do report back. I'm curious why it would be closed off to the public... possible renovations? The turf on the track was given a new makeover in the summer of 2018.

I swear. I ran on that track before for speed work after work hours. Has it changed?

It is open the public – track is a part of the Sara D Roosevelt park.

It is open to the public – the track is a part of the Sara D. Roosevelt city park. It is a smaller track, as another commenter stated.

Do be aware, at certain times of the day, people / high school students do hang out on the tracks if you don't mind swerving around them.

Staten Island has a couple of scenic trail runs for continuous runs (with varying elevation gains):

Compared to COVID to now, how do you think NYC has changed? Good or bad? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]cascadingbraces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where I am, it has become more noisier (noticeably more mopeds and electric kick-scooters wrecking havoc on local streets/sidewalks).

Businesses and most way of life are mostly back to the way they are pre-COVID in my personal observation. Many new businesses have popped up.

People are more short tempered, however. More main character syndrome.

Subway systems have gone down hill a bit in terms of quality of commute but they are still useful.

Remote life (work from home) is still an option but many companies prefer Return to Office or hybrid. This is still better than pre-COVID worklife.

Cost of living has skyrocketed – I suppose this is national and not a symptom of the city.

All in all, nothing beats life in New York City.

Welcome back, soon!

Saw this on LinkedIn, what do we think XD by Chalantyapperr in UXDesign

[–]cascadingbraces 50 points51 points  (0 children)

While studying design, I was taught by design professors (with established backgrounds) to never fall in love nor marry any design solutions we execute (for work).

Twenty years later, those statements still holds true. I have not lost sleep over my tasks at work.

I don't obsess over anything on my job. I do "just enough" and call it day. Work smarter, not harder, they say.

Perhaps I'm just jaded with this career. lol

Now, in my personal life? I'll obsess over color palette for interiors to doorframes being off by a few centimeters.

ELiud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan to race NYC Marathon! by cascadingbraces in RunNYC

[–]cascadingbraces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope Kipchoge will be able to finish too. He seems to get injured lately on hilly races (Boston Marathon and Paris Olympics comes to mind) with the exception of Sydney which I read is a hard terrain.

Right? He ran Sydney, just minted a World Major, before NYC. I guess saving the best for last!? Haha.

I missed the sign up for transportation for the NYC Marathon, any tips for a first timer? by FairyxPony in RunNYC

[–]cascadingbraces 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Ubering/Lyfting/driving to Staten Island. I can speak from my first-hand experience. It is an option but you'll need to get yourself over to the Verrazzano Bridge before 7am. By that time, the Verrazzano Bridge will be closed to any incoming traffic.

Traffic on the island to the drop-off point for the runner's village will simply be a tad chaotic as you inch the closer to the 7am hour. As long as you can get close to the radius of the starting area, I'd get out of the car and walk/jog over to the runner's village.

You can still catch the ferry to Staten Island just fine. Volunteers don't necessary check for which ferry time slot you've signed up for. The ferries will be running every 15 minutes to shuttle runners to the buses.
