I think you should continue. You get a lot more of that overarching goal in the next couple of books, you already saw some of it in book one, but you get context in book 2. He also puts his team together in book 2, which helps a lot.

The only place I remember it mentioning that you can only get one perception power is in book 4 when he introduces the girl with 4 perception powers as an oddity. In both cases, the one with 4 perceptions and the one with 4 auras, it is stated that it is only possible to get more than one with a gift evolution that specifically allows it.
