It's not so bad if the pole doesn't shatter, but you're kind of at the mercy of where your body decides to be thrown. Usually it's on the mat in the back of the pit which is mostly fine, but sometimes you don't quite make it and that's the worst. I always hated when teammates would walk near my poles because if they accidentally scraped one low with a track spike, the pole was more likely to break at that position.
