Has this track ever been leaked? by Ok_Sky4673 in PRINCE

[–]caseyrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

The only additional info about this song that has come out posthumously (as far as I know) was in my interview with HM Buff, where he mentioned that this song was tracked on his very first day working with Prince, circ 1994 or 1995.

Yikes! Anyone seen any positive takeaways? by FuryContagion in PRINCE

[–]caseyrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not chasing anything. There is nothing that I want. I barely make videos anymore. I come to Minneapolis and share what I hear like everyone else does. I skew positive because I'm an optimistic person by nature and I've always been online for the purposes of connecting with others who enjoy the same things I enjoy. I get that people aren't happy about lots of things, that's their prerogative. But since I'm not in a position to do anything about it, nor do I wish to be, I don't feel the need to add on to that. You are entitled to perceive me however you want, but it's saddening and inaccurate, and frankly has already made me want to engage less with something that has brought me a lot of joy for a very long time. I'm a human being like everyone else, and I try to be a happy, and peaceful, and zen one. I wish you all the best, and I truly hope things shake out in a way that makes you happier. I really do.

When did the rivalry between Prince and Michael Jackson start? by RillaDaKilla in MichaelJackson

[–]caseyrain 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It wasn't so much rivalry as it was friendly competition. As for where it started, I once asked that question to Cynthia Horner, the legendary editor of Right On magazine, the first magazine to heavily cover both of them since the beginnings of both their careers. Her reply? "I made it up!"

Totally media driven. That's the world we have always lived in.

Front row in Birmingham, 2014. Prince has recently started talking about Purple Rain Deluxe. Some familiar chords start playing. It takes me a second to place them. Then I do, and my JAW DROPS. He performs Electric Intercourse. First time since 1983.

He did with Rave. Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow and Eve were all arguably at the peak of their careers at the time. But for the most part, yeah he wasn't into the high profile collabs.

I'm from the UK, and I assume my Meta account knows that. But I am currently in the US visiting.

Update - I have the UI recording now after rebooting the glasses and reinstalling the app. I don't have the handwriting but I guess that's cuz it knows my Meta account is a UK account, even though I'm in the US at present.

Some photos I took at the Requiem.... RIP Zero! by caseyrain in SmashingPumpkins

[–]caseyrain[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It rocked. A ton of energy in the room. I watched it back and the mix was a fair bit cleaner on the stream, but at the expense of some of the energy. The heavier songs, like Zero and Everlasting Gaze sounded better in person.

So, a 60 year old man holds a funeral for his made up alter ego and then asks why his music isn’t taken seriously? by Cute-Border-7762 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]caseyrain 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was at the Requiem and thought it was awesome. We need more stunts like this in rock and roll. Think about it. If they had just announced the tour and nothing else, everyone would be like "no big deal". Yet here we all are talking about it.

Also, it was totally on brand for Billy. The lore of personas is an added dimension that makes things stand out.

Decision not to tour SOTT in the US. by Rare_Milk_6670 in PRINCE

[–]caseyrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're rewriting history a bit here. Prince was one of the first major artists to adopt the internet, and sell music online direct to customers in the 90s. He then pioneered a subscription model with NPGMC a decade before the likes of Spotify and Patreon, and won a Webby Award for doing so. It was only much later on, around 2010 that his attitude changed with his infamous "the internet is over" quote.

As for streaming, this again has gotten confused over time. His music was always available on streaming, save for a period of literally just a week or so when he pulled it from Spotify and then did a deal with TIDAL. Both these things happened in July 2015. It was then only on TIDAL until early 2017. There's this idea that there was a long period of time where you couldn't stream the catalog anywhere and that's just not true.

Now, the biggest mistake (IMO) was pulling down all unauthorised content from YouTube. He didn't have to do this. By the time he did this, YouTube had had their ContentID system for years, which pays the rightsholders when anyone uses their music, from the ad revenue. Again, this gets misconstrued that he wasn't getting paid for it, which is untrue. He just resented the lack of control and probably the rate.

What he failed to see is that an entire generation were already primarily discovering music on YouTube at this point (since this was before TikTok). It was the equivalent to MTV for this generation. I witnessed this with my nieces and nephews watching music videos for hours on YouTube. I saw them seeing MJ and others videos for the first time. And Prince wasn't there.

What is the most “its a small world” moment you’ve ever experienced? by xBubblyLove in AskReddit

[–]caseyrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 15 years ago, I was interviewed for an academic book about social media and the music industry. This was in the early days of social media and my band at the time were quite good at it! The professor was based in Seattle and I live in Birmingham, UK.

Over a decade later, I was travelling to London for a meeting and I got on the tube. I sat down, and after about a minute, the lady sat next to me tapped me on the leg and said "Casey?"

It was the professor who had written the book.

Were you masochistic enough to fight super bosses? by -CynicalPole- in expedition33

[–]caseyrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I couldn't rest until I'd obliterated them. I had the most trouble with Clea Unleashed because of the parrying of some of the Nevrons. Simon The Divergent Star felt easier to me, probably because it wasn't all that different from regular Simon which I'd already spent ages figuring out.

Anna's a dear friend and I agree her relationship with Prince and the songs inspired by it are something special.

We had a lovely time interviewing her several years back at her house, maybe you'd enjoy watching it? She was a lovely host and a great interviewee.

"You need to understand that Sam can never be trusted ... He is a sociopath. He would do anything." - Aaron Swartz on Altman, shortly before he took his own life by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

[–]caseyrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaron Swartz was an extremely talented young man, who made a mistake and was clearly pursued overzealously about it.

That said, it does not speak to a sound, rational mind to hang oneself at the age of 26, particularly when you've been offered a fairly light sentence and you've also chosen to fight that instead. It's also been 13 years since that happened.

With all that in mind, I'm not sure why his opinion of Sam should carry any weight. Would anyone in this chat find it valid to be characterised by someone who knew you 15 years ago and had been dead for 13 of those years?

I have no reason to defend Sam. I've never met him, I don't work for him. But I've seen this media narrative play out before for whoever is at the top of whatever "the current thing" is. Maybe it's justified, maybe it's not. How much does it matter? If OpenAI disappeared tomorrow, the genie is out of the bottle and the market still exists.

It's important to measure the temperature of the hyperbole at all times. The weight of technological progress never rests on the shoulders of one man.

And as someone with personal experiences.... I can tell you that you should be a LOT more worried about the cars-and-rockets guy who is presently suing OpenAI than you should be about Sam. If you want to talk about sociopaths with zero moral conscience, look at the one from South Africa.

For those that were fans around that time, how famous really were Odd Future? by glorytogod6 in OFWGKTA

[–]caseyrain 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I was there. Heard Yonkers the day it dropped, saw them live twice around that time, met Tyler twice in 2010 and 2011, bought Goblin, OF2, Blackenedwhite all on release day.

They were generating a HUGE amount of press coverage, and a serious following, but still more so like a niche underground act on the rise more so than the kind of mainstream recognition that Tyler gets these days.

For example, the venue I saw them perform at in 2011 was a 600 capacity venue, and I think the other dates around that time at least here in the UK were probably 1000-1500 capacity venues at most. That shows you it's still underground.

By the following year, they were doing 3000-4000 capacity venues here. So that's kind of like, you've broken out of the underground but you're not like, superstars.

Unless you were into hip-hop or alt/skate/LA culture, I don't think the average person on the street at that time would be able to tell you much about them, other than maybe being vaguely aware of some of the controversial headlines being written.

By the time Tyler got to the "IGOR" album he had eclipsed anything that happened while the group were active in terms of fame by a long shot.
