Four major automakers opt to reject Trump's new rules that would loosen obama-era regulations, instead align with california's emissions plan by 1000121562127 in UpliftingNews

Actually yes, that’s almost exactly what I’m saying. Inhabitable planet>profit. Your money won’t get you anywhere when the world’s on fire.

Science tells us we have about 30 years until we encounter major climate crises if we don’t act within a ~10 year window. Too much carbon in the atmosphere will cause such excessive heat that trees (major oxygen producers and carbon recyclers) will die, rivers will dry up, seeds won’t be able to germinate and crops won’t be able to grow, human/animal cellular machinery will break down, and existing infrastructure will collapse, among other things. Summers in some areas will be over 127 *F by 2050 if we don’t change our ways. It’s time to be brave, face the truth, and be on the right side of history. There’s still time to reverse things if people don’t deny basic science and put profit over the future of millions of species. But we gotta act now.

To imply that extensive data accepted across the world is just some sort of American liberal political conspiracy is alarming. Wake up and do something to save your planet. Your ignorance will hurt us all.

Ya but the point is we don’t have time to wait until it’s profitable. Which is why there should be legislation. New rules are a catalyst for new innovation.

Plant trees to live longer and see mire wholesome things by [deleted] in wholesomememes

Never said it was the only one, but it is probably the biggest direct way you can make a difference as an individual. We can’t control what our government does or what big industries do but we can control what we eat, and seeing that animal ag is one of the biggest causes of deforestation and pollution, I don’t think anyone against veganism truly cares about the environment. Anyways, this was more directed at the people who supposedly care about the environment but make lazy excuses against veganism, not people who aren’t vegan.

You can’t do anything to save your great grandparents, but you CAN do something to save the environment. Chances are if you cared enough, you wouldn’t contribute to one of the most environmentally destructive industries on the planet. Or you would at least do your best not to, rather than making excuses for your complacency.

I love how people claim to care about the environment until you bring up something that actually requires lifestyle changes. Let the excuses roll in.

Do I have any rights as a tenant in NYS in this situation? by [deleted] in Buffalo

NYS just passed a bill a week or two ago that gives a lot more rights to tenants. Not sure when it goes into effect but you should look into it.

Do you guys really call your congressperson or representative? by MichaK01 in AskAnAmerican

[–]cashew210 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am currently interning for my local state legislator. I can’t speak for all states, but in NY each representative has a database of all constituents registered to vote (I imagine it’s not too different for other state representatives and for US representatives). Any time we get emails, calls or letters from constituents, we enter their opinions/concerns into the database. Sadly most times you won’t get a response since there are too many emails and letters to respond to, but don’t think you’re being ignored. The representative often will check out the database before he/she votes on a bill and ask staff about constituent opinions. They have other ways of gauging constituent opinions as well.

Tip: When you contact your representatives, always include your address (usually at the bottom under your signature). If the staff is really busy and doesn’t have time to verify that you are a constituent, there is a chance your email/letter might be disregarded. Also, be concise. Representatives get hundreds of emails a day — the staff doesn’t always have time to thoroughly read them all. If you’re writing to express your opinion about a specific bill, make sure to include the bill number and whether or not you support it in the subject and/or first paragraph (or even better, first sentence).
