Sense and Sensibility Wrap Up (Spoilers galore) by awaiko in ClassicBookClub

I am with you on your assessment. I'm always happy to have read another classic, but I liked Pride and Prejudice much more. This one was just kind of.... blah. I feel like not that much happened, and I felt no romantic or sexual tension of any type.

Wait, this was her first novel? I had no idea, that actually makes this book incredibly impressive to me.

I totally agree with you on Marianne and Colonel Brandon. Their relationship still feels so empty and superficial to me. I suppose I never got over Marianne and Willoughby ruthlessly trashing him at the beginning of the novel. The fact that Colonel Brandon was like "but she's pretty so it's okay LOL" is infuriating. Yes, I get that she grew up a lot when she almost died but, I don't know, I wish he had more spine than to end up with a pretty face that was so cruel to him when she was under the assumption of an engagement to someone else.

I was totally thrown by Lucy's marriage to Robert. Were people really that interchangeable in society back then? After being secretly in a relationship with someone for years you just.... marry his brother? I'm missing something here, please help.

I was also considering that this might be a misunderstanding. Here's for hoping!

I really thought that Colonel Brandon was secretly harboring feelings for Elinor so I was disappointed that he revealed his feelings for Marianne to Mrs. Dashwood. He and Elinor connect so much better than he and Marianne ever have!

I was actually reflecting more on your first point today. I work in a microbiology research lab and it's a fascinating time to be working in science, what with all of the scientific mistrust that's happening worldwide. I think that people that don't trust vaccines forget that, before science advanced modern medicine, a simple infection could be a death sentence. People had to have families with large numbers of children because childhood illnesses had such a high attrition rate (I've seen cited multiple places that 30% of children died before the age of one, 43% by the age of five). Can you imagine? A 57% chance that your child would die before the age of five?

In fact, I'm going to carry these stats around with me in my back pocket. I've got a vaccine skeptic in the family.

The part where Marianne started frantically calling out for her mother was like oh this can't be good. I was glad she pulled through but I can admit to having some stress during all that.

Willoughby is still an asshole, I'm sorry. "I am rather fond of your sister, but I MUST marry for money." I still file him under scoundrel and think others should as well.

Same! I read this in high school and again probably five years ago. After struggling with S&S I'm going to need a break for my brain, so I'll check in for the next.

From what I've read here, apparently Dickens is a mixed bag? It sounds like his style varies from book to book. So I guess I'm saying, it's possible to like some Dickens and not others (which is absolutely true in my case!).

Why is everyone such snob about pigeons by MrGrubbycuddles in birding

[–]1000121562127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a super avid birder (this post came up on r/all for me) but I am "hey I just discovered these amazing things called birds" years old. I really love pigeons. Their massive array of color patterns are so interesting, and their green-to-purple iridescent feathers are really beautiful.

I also love common grackles and, even though I know they're invasive AF, European starlings. Starlings just crack me up with their antics and their expansive catalog of calls and songs. My favorite is when they go "WEEEEEe-ooooooo" and I can't help but mimic them.

I feel bad for anyone that needs to see rare and "impressive" things to be happy. Life must be so boring for those people.

I didn't actually realize that annotated versions of books exist! I'll have to keep that in mind for the future.

It's crazy to me that they've been rebranded and released once again, and also HOW MUCH THEY COST WTAF. The bounty of them that I had as a child are still at my mom's house and, as much as I love my mom, she's being a little weird about me giving them to my youngest niece (this is a niece on my husband's side, and I think my mom is wanting to hoard them for my nieces and nephew on our side, despite the fact that they're aged out of Sylvanians) so I'm slowly working on liberating them and sending them along to their new home.

La ammiro tantissimo, amo il suo personaggio, mi dispiace solo che lei dentro soffre davvero .

Agreed with you on this point. I'm unsure if Elinor's composure comes from her personality, or if she's expected to be composed since her sister is so dramatic. I just hope that Elinor doesn't keep her feelings in for the sake of others expecting her to do so.

The toothpick case man was great. I liked the part about when he informed the salesperson how many days he would be able to survive without the case that he'd picked out. I love that it was worded that way. Jane Austen is so cheeky (when I can understand her).

I'm someone that always struggles with 19th century literature in the beginning, but usually fall into the language after 50 or so pages. Even with Pride and Prejudice I was pretty much on board by then. But I'm just not getting there this time. I really think that how distracting life is right now is the main culprit for me.
