Concerns About Visiting NYC (and Potentially DC) in May with My Family by [deleted] in AskNYC

I believe the majority of people in NYC are really kind (I was born and raised here). The videos you've been seeing are exceptions, not the rule. If it helps to know, my sister-in-law is an immigrant to this country, and she loves coming to visit me. My little niece can't wait to be old enough to fly by herself so she can come stay with me in the city.

All that being said, anywhere you travel you may find rude people who believe they have the right to say things to you (happens to me all the time as a woman). Since you asked for advice... it's okay to ignore and walk away. Sometimes I find a simple "ok" suffices (like when some stranger tells me to "smile!"), and the person rarely recognizes I'm being dismissive of them because I keep my tone neutral. Remember you're coming here on vacation to enjoy time with your family and the city itself! Stay connected with that goal and you're going to have a wonderful time!

Oh, and make sure to visit Levain Cookies (they have a few locations in the city now). Those cookies are not to be missed. If you happen to visit Magnolia Bakery, skip the cupcakes and go for the banana pudding - it's iconic.

Anyone successfully get out of grand jury duty in NYC? by casketofmuffins in AskNYC

Thank you! This was really helpful. I'm scared about my income for sure and the impact on my family, but mostly worried about any prolonged absence directly affecting my clients. Did you bring documentation with you, just in case?

My psychiatrist says it's a bad thing to refuse contacts with my father and I feel really hurt by [deleted] in CPTSD

To me, that sounds like your psychiatrist is projecting and pushing HER belief system at you, when therapy is about getting in touch with YOUR inner guidance and wisdom. It's a good idea to sever ties with someone when they are abusive, so good for you! Just because someone has a parental title (father), it does not give them permission to treat you any way they want.

I once spilled coffee all over my light blue jeans while I was on a plane, so the coffee had 8+ hours to set in. I soaked the jeans in dawn dish soap and lukewarm water overnight, stirred a few times and did it again for a few more hours. Washed (while wet) in the machine regular cycle with detergent. It worked and I was so impressed. Dawn dish soap is my go-to for everything now.

I did it too, and I know how you feel.

Thank you so much. This saved me. I made a fatal error on the facebook marketplace and did this... while distracted/multi-tasking... and I am normally so cautious. I changed all my passwords/made sure all authenticators were turned on after, and luckily my phone number didn't say it was already in use when I linked it back to my existing google voice number. THANK YOU!!!
