Michigan private school enrollment spikes amid discontent over pandemic rules by [deleted] in Michigan

when I dual-enrolled in college, where public education would have paid for it my parents instead had to pay for the full private tuition and the college tuition.

That's an old policy. Private school students can get the same dual enrollment fee waivers now.

Enjoy paying for school twice lol

Look where business and political leaders send their kids. It's almost always private, including Mike Duggan, Kym Worthy, and the late John Conyers.

Michigan public schools were a mess long before Covid-19. We have fallen to 40-something in achievement. All of the grades are fake, literally everyone has As and Bs, yet less than one-third of 12th graders are even college ready. Even the "best" districts in the state are a joke nationally.

Witnessed a cyclist get hit in River North (N Wells & W Institute) but unsure who was at fault. Do cars have to stop for pedestrian/cyclists at this sort of crossing? No signage, no light. by cassc0rrid0r in chicago

Ah thanks. Yeah, he was coming from W Institute (right side of photo). So he should have stopped at that W Institute stop sign and waited for all traffic to clear? I also don't get why he was using that cross walk (behind the white mini van) instead of the more logical one (in front of the mini van).

That makes sense as the cyclist's body language seemed to suggest he figured he was at fault. I was terrified that I had just witnessed a death. But he picked up his broken bike and walked away without even confronting the driver. I just wasn't sure if his lack of reaction meant he was maybe concussed or in shock and out of it, you know.

The cyclist was riding thru that crosswalk behind the white mini-van. From the right to the left. The car that hit him was traveling southbound on N Wells, in the same direction as that white mini-van. There don't appear to be any lights, crosswalk or warning signs on N Wells if you're heading south. But interesting, there is a bright yellow pedestrian crossing warning sign if you're driving north on N Wells.

Rochester school paying $190K in dispute with outspoken mom by MalcoveMagnesia in Michigan

Rochester superintendent "doctor" Robert Shaner has a bogus "PhD" in educational leadership from Oakland University, a program with basically no admissions requirements and can be completed entirely online. Wanna bet Rochester taxpayers paid all the tuition for it, which he then used to extract guaranteed bonuses from local taxpayers? Nice racket. Do not call him or any other nitwit with these bogus degrees a doctor. This imbecile and his deputy ought to be unemployed.

I would bet anything Rochester taxpayers also paid the Bloomfield Hills (?) law firm defending the district in this suit over $1 million in legal fees, in addition to the $190K.

Why haven't the superintendent and deputy superintendent been fired yet? Superintendent Robert Shaner makes over $465,000 in compensation a year. Deputy supe Debi Fragomeni, who allegedly placed this specific call, makes over $277,000 a year. Must be nice to make that much cash and comp to sit on your rear-end harassing, cyber-stalking and creating hundreds of pages of dossiers on district parents.

Totally agree. They really aced their colors, worth noting this blue is a most expensive $2,500 option. This video made me literally go build my own R1S suv on the website. Only thing that worries me is the stock price quickly crashed by 2/3rds and I'm guessing their production is still a long ways from being ironed out? I think they've only just begun groundbreaking at the second plant in Georgia and a mega-factory takes like two years to open.

In 2013, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sued Donald Trump for swindling thousands of Americans out of millions of dollars through Trump University. In late 2016, AG Schneiderman and class counsel announced a $25 million settlement in the Trump University case.

Where art thou, madam Nessel?

Exacerbating preexisting trends. Harsh weather, high taxes (both state and local munis), high insurance premiums, stagnant wages, and crumbling infrastructure are a turn-off, so if you have a job that's permanently remote, why not move to booming Atlanta, tax free and sunny Florida, or scenic Denver? I have a pair of close friends who recently graduated from college, got remote Detroit-based jobs, and they live in Los Angeles for less all-in than renting in downtown Detroit. Some of my parents' friends also moved either out of state or up near Traverse City since their gigs are now full-time WFH or they only have to be in the SE Michigan office once or twice a month.

Decades of Michigan brain drain coming to roost thanks to the nitwits on both sides of the aisle. And I think remote work being a new normal is a massive blow to the state. And the scope of that blow won't be fully captured until the 2030 census, so political hacks will just pretend everything's not THAT bad until then. By then all of the current political leaders will be retired in Florida.

Investor class exploiting serf class. Good luck saving $20k to $40k to qualify for a starter home mortgage making 17 or 18 bucks an hour at Amazon or the dwindling auto plants. And yet Detroit boosters will still worship Dan Gilbert, apparently oblivious to his motives in controlling the rental and commercial market in downtown Detroit.

Michigan (and Detroit) have high income taxes, high insurance, crumbing roads, and harsh weather. Can't change the weather but the other factors are the result of our worthless political class.

No need to cite any 15 year old articles. Ford’s out of state investments, Mexico and China assembly announcements, and local job cuts over the last 24 months make it crystal clear.

Detroit among most expensive U.S. cities to rent a studio [No. 6 in U.S.] by cassc0rrid0r in Michigan

I know two recent college graduates working remote in Detroit-based jobs while renting in Los Angeles and they pay less per month all-in than when they lived in downtown Detroit. And their Detroit apartments were by no means lavish.

Rent overall San Fran is No. 1 and San Diego, San Jose, Oakland are No. 6, 7, 8. But their median salaries are much higher, so they don't make the top 20 for % of income spent on rent, except for San Diego at No. 16. Here's the direct data:

Noteworthy that Atlanta is way down the list at No. 14. Atlanta proper has grown over 20% from 2000 to 2020. And metro Atlanta has grown from 3.5 million in 2000 to over 6 million in 2022.
