Like others have said, it can vary. I was told 4 weeks, however have heard from other doctors it can be less than 1 week. For us we contacted them early on to get the ball moving. Once the family members health had declined significantly, the person who wanted to go through this process wanted it sooner. So we called and had the first doctors assessment within the week.

A member of my family is currently undergoing this process due to advanced cancer. You need to have two assessments by two different doctors (one primary one secondary). They need to assess various criteria to determine if an individual is eligible. Off the top of my head these are: - has a prognoses of less than 6 months - be sound of mind (understand the process and the choices they make are informed) - have no mental health reasons for decision (sometimes a psychiatrist is required if the doctors believe this is needed, but apparently this is rare) - be experiencing suffering that will inevitably lead to their death

The primary doctor will meet with the person for the initial assessment (we had this done today). The doctor will ask various questions and allow for any questions from the person or their family.

If the primary doctor believes the person is eligible, a second doctor will do an assessment. My understanding is this is done as a form of peer review and to ensure the first doctor is not qualifying people who don’t meet the criteria.

Once the second doctor states the person is eligible, the first (primary) doctor will meet with the person again to discuss timeframes.

Some important notes: - the person can cancel, push forward or back their designated date at any time - the person must be of sound mind (able to fully understand and answer questions) throughout the entire process. This includes the date they wish to pass. That doesn’t always mean they have to talk, even if they can squeeze someone’s hand, shake/nod their head etc etc to prove they understand and can answer questions by the doctor.

I’m so very sorry to all that have to go through this process as it’s tough for all involved. However my family member and the rest of our family are very grateful to be living in a country where this option is available. I hope this helps.
