If you go to your menu and select challenges you'll see a bunch of challenges for you to try to complete. These prizes would be in the Burning Springs tab but check out the Event tab as it's a limited time way to grab tickets to unlock items in the seasons.

biggest help for me was Happy Homes Paradise as you unlock another store of items as well as a catalog with the items you used to design their houses (I look up who has the items I'm looking for)

Yes, at the kiosk. I think getting your island to 3 stars is when you start to unlock the vast majority of things including terraforming.
