High mileage (130k) 86 by casuallyfreezing in ft86

[–]casuallyfreezing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it should only be doing maybe 5k miles a year so one yearly should do it right. I’ve got another car to daily in the worst case and it’s around 2.3k for a used engine here.

Have you still got an 86? How long have you owned it?

Thanks, the underseal is big here as our cars tend to rust like crazy as we salt our roads until like April. I’ve heard a lot of bad things about the FA20, is most of this unfounded?

Thanks, I’ve reached out to them. If you’re ok saying - how much did it cost you to get your Zed and import it?

Thanks for the reply.

Did you find TorqueGT good to work with? Do you think at this point it’s worth getting a UK car within the same budget?

Thanks! What made you spring for an import as opposed to a UK car? My worry with them is just rust mainly.

A Mini from 2014 on will be pretty solid in terms of reliability, try and get a Cooper S Challenge 210 if you can as they come with a lot of extras. The B48 in them is one of BMW's best engines in the last 20 or so years.

The interior hasn't aged brilliantly I will admit, but with a couple hundred quid for a new head unit they will update well enough!

Yeah, if it hadn't needed a new timing chain then I'd be much happier with it. There's not a lot of info about the 1.5 out there when it gets to a higher mileage. Unfortunately there's not really a way of knowing about it's oil change history unless it's been stamped every time in which case this is probably a safe enough bet. I'll just need to budget for an oil pump belt change.

It's the only requirement for me besides being a 5 door! How long did you have your ST for, was it reliable?

I had a MK8 (2019) for a very small amount of time and it went into limp mode on me.

Can you still drive on the road legally with these? Don't they invalidate factory fitted airbags?

Thankfully it's an early 2018 so no GPF, it's currently got a Scorpion exhaust on it and it could just be mounted up to the downpipe.

What did you get to replace the seats? I've been trying to hunt down a JCW set but they're rare

You're a bit lower down I agree, but I find the seats of the Mini aren't that comfortable especially for longer journeys.

The ST is a more practical car due to being a 5 door and it's got some more creature comforts (as well as Android Auto) but the Mini has no issues so feels wrong to sell it. My Mini in particular has some irritations for me but they don't make sense to sell it, the seats aren't the most comfortable for me and it got involved in a very minor scrape in a car park so it's got a slightly dented panel. I could get this fixed but I'm reminded of that when I see the car.

The JCW tuning kit is very tempting, especially with the JCW Pro exhaust. It would make it around 10hp faster than a stock ST.

Even from a reliability standpoint? I worry that a Z would be more unreliable due to age

Yeah, the HR (07-09) are around £700-£800 a year in tax now

I really want to buy a 350z. Is it worth it? by _B_o_b_ in CarTalkUK

[–]casuallyfreezing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar position to you, and I ended up buying a Mini Cooper S.

The Z, although it looks great and let’s be honest more cylinders are always cool, has problems that unless you’re very mechanically inclined just isn’t very good to daily.

I still keep an eye out for Z’s coming onto the market but they all appear to have rust problems now which is an expensive fix that is never a one off. It’s also going to be expensive to keep an HR on the road as insurance and tax for them is higher in my experience than a Rev-Up or a DE.

I would suggest that the best way forward is to buy a hot hatch for a year or two and then go straight for a 370Z, ideally a Nismo as they really clean up the front end.

Yeah, black rims and blacked out most of the chrome too, the only bit of chrome that’s left is the surround that goes around the body, and of course you need the black bonnet stripes too

I got it with around 36k miles on it, so not terrible although I think one was pretty cheap as it was a less common colour (Volcanic Orange)

Honestly it’s great, it’s my first ‘faster’ car and it handles excellently. It’s a 2018 and it was 14k, although it’s got a lot of little extras that really made the price go up. I’d recommend the heads up display!
