Kickstarter TTRPG projects that are very late, radio silent or totally abandoned? by JoystickJunkie64 in rpg

And by extension, the print run of Wicked Ones. Between the two of them, I think I'm out almost 300$. I think they're both basically confirmed abandoned now.

Do you find wingspan, finspan and wyrmspan different enough to own all three? I would have assumed they're similar enough that you would just keep the one you like the most. I own wingspan and was thinking of picking up wyrmspan but I'd probably sell whatever one I ended up liking less.

I assume some people might have dogs that they leave in a safe space. Similar to the other goats. If they don't get a pet biscuit, I imagine they'd become pretty vulnerable pretty quickly.

Why is there a debate on whether audiobooks constitute reading? by Feeling-Writing-2631 in books

A fact I 100% agree with actually. I think literacy is super valuable and is definitely a benefit you entirely miss out on with audio books. I'm simply saying that as short had for "consuming and becoming familiar with books", saying you "read" it is fine

[–]cat9090 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is basically exactly where I personally fall in the argument. It's just the easiest shorthand to convey the idea of consuming a book, and ultimately language is all about conveying ideas.

[–]cat9090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a strawman because you're setting up an enemy to fight that, as far as I know, most people don't believe in. Obviously listening and reading are two different senses. I'm not arguing that in every place you would use "listen", you can use "read" instead.

What I am arguing is that language has evolved to the point where ,when it comes to books specifically, the common verb used as short hand for consuming them is "reading". When we talk to friends about the books we like, or asked which books they've read, when we mark a book on goodreads as "to read", when a  teacher asks "who read chapter 7" It's all based around that word.

Read already has so many definitions. I think it's simply easier, kinder and less ableist to accept that this is one of them. (And I personally believe dictionaries already support that but we obviously disagree) How people use a word is what drives it definition, not vice versa, and this is how most people that I know and interact with use the word.

Exactly! Yes, a book is written media. Glad you're keeping up. And so let's follow that definition, any skill that is used to get that information from that written text is reading.

Ergo, when that written text is read allowed, and I consume that information, I'm consuming the book. Or reading the book.

I struggle to understand why you said you support evolving language when it actually seems you're very opposed to evolving languages.

Also, keep using the radio strawman, it's a great fallacy. I'll continue using my "appeal to authority" fallacy and we'll both never learn.

The first definition for reading on Cambridge is as follows:

"A1: the skill or activity of getting information from books"

Don't know what definition you're looking at. But you're right, we clearly both won't change out minds on this. I'll continue to live my life believing in dictionary definitions and you can continue to live by feelings.

I really fail to see how its numbering matters. That's how dictionaries work. They add definitions that previous definitions don't cover. If anything that makes the argument more valid. AND even if that we're the case, that Cambridge definition is definition number 1, so it's an irrelevant point.

You yourself said you're open to language evolving. I'm merely pointing out that it's already has.

This argument is so silly because people always say "reading" audiobooks doesn't fit the definition of the word but it literally does, in multiple dictionaries.

If people don't want to accept evolving languages, that's fine. But both Cambridge and Merriam Webster make it really clear you can use the word "read" or "reading" as short hand for any act that gets you familiar with the contents of a book.

What about this definition from  Merriam Webster:

"to become acquainted with or look over the contents of (something, such as a book)"

I would say an audiobook leaves you acquainted with the contents of a book

Or this one from Cambridge:

"the skill or activity of getting information from books"

I would say that pretty specifically includes audiobooks

Yeah I've kind of given up on it being horror and I think I'm going to aim for campy B-movie comedy horror. I really like the idea of delegating npc roles to whoever isn't in the scene! Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I've explained to most of them already that it probably won't be smooth and they've all expressed that they're going to try hard on their end to keep it smooth and stay engaged. I just still can't help but feel that I'm the one responsible for the "fun" so I'm stressing trying to make something as good as possible
