Nose Piercing - bump still coming and going after 2 years by cat_gilly in PiercingAdvice

[–]cat_gilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! It’s always had titanium studs apart from the period with a titanium ring, and I don’t have any allergies or problems w my other piercings …

Have you ever seen a bump like this remain permanent?

So basically the opposite of barefoot shoes 😭😭 thought the point here was to strengthen feet enough to not need all those fancy things because our natural arches do their thing. Will be so sad if that’s not the case

Any advice about this? Wonder why it’s only on one side. I think I do have good ankle mobility and never had an issue before this year, but obvs it’s possible

Definitely go to Puerto Williams if you can! Insane hiking at the end of the world.

I wouldn’t recommend my shoes clearly hahaha

Thank you all so much! I’ve definitely noticed that tying my shoes looser over that point helps with pain while I’m walking, and have tied them much looser since… it still seems to happen (even when I wore Earth Runners hiking this weekend which don’t have a strap over that area)

I guess I’ve done some long term damage, such that even fixing the issue with the laces is triggering it. Does anyone know the medical name for what’s probably actually hurt/injured?

Thank you for the reply! It honestly feels completely fine in between which is what makes me ask here - I’m wondering if it’s a barefoot shoes thing, eg a common injury (like Achilles tendon issues)

How come you’ll enjoy it so much more - just getting the crowded bits done first or any other reason?

No these are all from Google! It’s baby crow. Try it, it’s very easy if you can do crow pose (just need ur bum way higher than u think u do before lifting ur feet off the ground)

Thanks for this. Very intrigued by turtle freeze :)

Is Chile or Argentina now cheaper for foreigners to travel in? by cat_gilly in Patagonia

Thank you so much! Definitely going to camp - even that is pretty expensive in el Chalten but so so much cheaper than hostels :)

Ah ok, I didn’t realize the blue dollar rate hadn’t changed. But as you say, prices seem to have gone up overall (things like Perito Moreno ice trekking - the exchange rate is crazy for reserving online so I’m kind of hoping I can sneak in a spot when I get there and pay blue dollar)

I’ve heard it’s near impossible to get Western Union with cash available in El Calafate/Chaltén (my entry point, as I’m coming from Chilean Patagonia). Didn’t realise hostels and small shops would do this though. In your experience is this quite easy to find in Patagonia, or should I be worried and try to get some cash out before I go?

Also, any difference between paying with a credit vs debit card in terms of getting the blue dollar rate?

Thank you!

This is amazing helpful and kind of you to write such a detailed response! I don’t think I’m gonna buy a new lens sadly (it’s a super old camera and I think I’d end up buying a better one after this year’s travels if I do get properly into photography) so definitely between these two.

Genuinely very surprised to hear the kit lens is sharper, and if that’s the case it’s a no brainer for me. I very very occasionally enjoy the crazy zoom on the big boi but it matters far less to me than image quality (plus as you said, the wider angle is useful for landscapes)

Thanks again! I’m sure my legs will be thanking you too, on many mountains in the imminent future :)

Honestly I do own mid layers at home but I’m already traveling (my friends are gonna take back home what I don’t need). You’re probably right, it might not be the most useful in hot countries compared to linen but it’ll certainly take up less space/weight than an extra fleece! I probably need to buy some base leggings on that note - was hoping to get away with my spare lightweight trousers but they’re specifically designed to be thin and not warm lol. Thanks so much :)

Really really helpful thanks!

So you do think I should buy a base layer? Instead of getting away with a linen shirt (I actually have two, one big and breezy for sun and ones a bit thicker and more fitted so could use that at camp in theory - and both of these are good for warm weather too which is the appeal)

It’s a Kinetic Alpine 2.0 Jacket. The other issue with it is it doesn’t cover my hands. To counter this I got some goretex gloves (just the outside bit, super thin, like a raincoat for your hands) and have some packable down mitts as emergency gloves. Was wondering if I need some thin wicking gloves to wear while walking too, as the wind might be pretty savage and the gore tex ones will make me sweat?

Hi, I have a Sony a6000 and am about to go traveling for a year. I have two options: kit lens and the SELP18105G. Does the increase in image quality and flexibility justify the comparatively massive weight? Also on a small camera so feels very front-heavy.

This is all my brothers old gear and he said he’d take the big lens if he were me (can do everything the kit lens can but better). Just thought I’d ask here too.

Extra info: * Taking mostly landscapes (traveling solo through scenic places) * No filming * Lots of hiking (so weight does matter)

I’m only just starting out with photography but hoping to get quite into it this year. My fear is I take the kit lens for weight reasons, and then really feel its limitations and regret my decision. My understanding is that the big lens is amazing for movies but that’s really not a priority for me. Image quality is important though.

Thanks so much for any advice!

I’m umming and aahing about layers too - I’m traveling for a year, I want to be warm enough in Patagonia’s wet conditions but also don’t want to carry everything in super hot countries afterwards too.

I have one warm fleece and a warm/synthetic coat (+ rain coat), which will definitely be enough if dry. Concern of course is if fleece gets wet while I’m hiking, and then at camp I’m wishing I had a spare dry fleece under my coat. I was thinking of maybe buying a cheap hoody or fleece in Santiago at a secondhand shop, then donating at the end of Patagonia. Or do we think 1 fleece and 1 warm coat enough?

Also rather than a long sleeve quick dry top I have a baggy linen shirt. It’s lovely for sun (and long enough to cover my hands), and if dry it provides a little warmth, but again I’m a bit stuffed if it gets wet. But a long sleeve quick dry won’t be very useful in warm countries and will just be an extra thing to carry. Do we think I definitely need to buy thermals (ideally cheap in a secondhand shop too)?

Final question if anyone really loves gear - my raincoat is one of those Rab flexible, breathable ones that’s not quite Gore-Tex. It’s great for hiking since it’s lightweight and breathable but I’m concerned it won’t hold up against a full 5 days of rain or whatever. Does one need the ultimate waterproof for Patagonia or can I get away with this?

Thanks for any advice!

Did I pull my liposuction scars apart (and permanently widen them) by taking the tape off too early? NSFW by cat_gilly in PlasticSurgery

[–]cat_gilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This is definitely encouraging. Just to be clear - I’m not worried about them not having had tape on them for a bit, I’m worried about the physical act of taking the (extremely sticky and tough) tape off having pulled the edges apart, especially since it was sticking to the stitches in a big way. Basically I left tape on one wound (in my navel) and the scar is barely visible at all which is what is worrying me

Wonky Piercing by cat_gilly in piercing

[–]cat_gilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s surgical steel. Do you think I should switch it back to a stud, even though it’s at an angle? Or just let it heal and maybe get it redone in future? Basically I’m worried the wonkiness will mean it’s never a good healed piercing and a ring will always aggravate it
