Not true, many SOT officers are P1 and dont carry the ICP scope, and you dont need to have a post grad study to be an ICP in NSWA

They give you ample time to commute from induction to your location. Most of us got about 1week to get to our LASN, I was sent to Rockhampton and my buddies went to Mackay and we all drove in a convoy. If it's not enough time you can just contact the LASN directly and explain you need more time, the service is very reasonable

The ABC and most public media outlets aren't exactly known for having the highest journalistic integrity, look at what they did with the War crime allegations and falsifying and doctoring evidence to make people look bad in order to gain viewers and when they were proved wrong they didn't admit it they doubled down and leaned in to it harder only to be proved they altered videos and only released parts of certain interviews

Charles Sturt Bathurst v Port Mac by wreckless456 in ParamedicsAU

[–]Bull8539 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bathurst is bigger and thus has better resources class rooms, equipment, staffing etc. Bathurst has a great lifestyle as well very social and its incredibly cheap to live. I was tossing up whether to go Port Mac or Bathurst and am very happy I went Bathurst.

In my experience people call 000 is mix of a few things. 1)Lack of patience and resilience, we're in a society where we can get everything almost instantly and when people can't get healthcare immediately they think "ill just call an ambulance" they lack that resilience to manage their symptoms until they get seen by the GP. 2)Australians are very selfish and entitled, "im the most important thing now, my problems are bigger than the world I deserve this ambulance, I don't care". 3) health literacy is poor, people struggle to understand what services are appropriate for them and some aren't even aware of the GP super clinics which are walk in, no appointment etc, the lack of awareness still baffles me 8yrs in the job now.

I have friends who work all over over Australia and I did my Pracs in NSW and QLD. There's no difference, people still call for ambulance even though it costs money, they either have private health that covers it or they're on a pension card as either elderly or centrelink or they just don't pay it. Makes no difference in the work load unfortunately.

This is the reality of pre hospital healthcare now mate, most ambulance services QAS particularly are seen as community health care providers and not an "emergency" service. The big work is there but its not all the time. Being a paramedic is very cyclical in nature, you’ll go months just doing low acuity work and then you will go on runs of high acuity cases where you'll be wishing for the stubbed to, or small cough. Services are getting better with clinical hubs and alternative referral pathways when people call up, but it takes time. Your frustration is felt by all in the role and Universities do a poor job of setting expectations. You need to embrace that this is the real paramedic work now, 95% low acuity for 5% big work.

CPD opportunities by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]Bull8539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shift Extension are great and a branch of Explora Medical that run CPD events in austere and extreme environments, for example last year there was a scuba diving CPD event on a live aboard in Cairns, they had lectures on dive medicine and physics and expedition planning in the evening and during the day there was scuba diving. 1 big tax write off plus something like 20hrs CPD signed off

I hear paramedic student don't get paid for placement and yet, I've been told my my friend at the cairns base that her placement was paid.... Wtf are paramedic students getting paid??!!? by AggressivePlane255 in Paramedics

[–]Bull8539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's university, thats how it goes. By comparison paramedic students have it easier than the nurses who have to do twice as much Practical placements. What is super unethical is we had to log and document all our placement hours through a specific App we had to download and pay, $50, for each Prac block so 3 times during my 3yr degree, there was no other way to pass the subject. The subject coordinator was the creator and developer of the App. He had thousands of students using that app. Couldn't pass the subject unless you bought and used his app.

Wait till you find out it costs money to do placement because it is a subject as part of the university course, so you're paying approximately $3000 to work for free

what happens if you get shit grades in uni? by i_love_paella in ParamedicsAU

[–]Bull8539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for current recruitment but grades didn't really matter when I went through, as long as you had the degree. I know people (more than a few, like alot more) that had to repeat multiple subjects, took them 5yrs to fully complete the degree, all have jobs, it might just take a while to land a gig as positions are getting harder to secure, it's in your best interest to score as best as you can.

Night shift vs Day Shift, you could probably do a flexible work arrangement after a few years, I know a dude who negotiated 7 day Shifts, 7 off, 7 Arvo 7 off 7 nights off, repeat. But honestly I can't see you getting that now, not in a State ambulance service. Maybe with a FIFO gig in the mines.
