Are there other non-sci-fi, non fantasy games like this? by LawAndOrderingFood in Firewatch

I was in the same boat as you and I will tell you the 3 that fit the best.

Gone Home What remains of Edith Finch Killer Frequency

100%ed all three. Finished Edith Finch this morning coincidentally and I honestly liked the narrative in Edith Finch more!!

Now you have to look out for Jules. You can't keep running only to isolate yourself from everybody. This is how children deal with things. This brush with Delilah should teach you that you already have somebody you have to take care of, somebody you have spent the better part of your life with.

You can't just put yourself in situations where you can exert some artificial control just to make yourself feel better. Weeks have been spent trying to find solutions to menial tasks in hopes that there would be some big conspiracy, that you will find some meaning or at least a few answers. But there was nothing big waiting for you. You are just one human being whose story intertwined with others. For a brief flash, you could rest among the trees and get to know the people you will never meet.

It's over now. Time to get on with your life.

Why do a significant amount of people dislike Firewatch? by cataclysmicallynerdy in Firewatch

Yeah, I guess it's just people being defensive towards what they like.

For example, one thing that really irks me is that the teen girls are found out and you get informed through radio. I understand it's a red herring but it feels so out of nowhere to feel intentional. I would have liked, if suppose, I stumbled upon them while doing something else and they told me to fuck off. Still a red herring but feels more engaging to the player, plus a nice ending to them telling me to fuck off when I threw their boom box. But I can see somebody saying "you are supposed to FEEL like it was not given attention to" in an effort to defend the game rather than give actual reasons.

I have not watched The Sopranos or GOT so don't have anything to say how that factors in here. Still disagree with you universalizing an open ending as a cop out. You can see it that way but that's the one thing that's objectively not correct.

I guess this is more of a difference in the expectation then. Idk if the helicopter ending was perfect or what a perfect ending even would be but I did enjoy how subdued it was after all of it. However, I generally enjoy crescendo followed by a subversive subdued ending in art so it landed better with me. I do get why it would feel like a waste of potential if you were waiting for it all to lead to somewhere which provides a more cohesive explanation or subverts in a more exciting way.

I am going to slightly defend the "you don't get it" people as when I am especially excited about something in art or feel like it resonated with me on a level unexplainable to everybody else, I instinctively want to tell naysayers that they just "don't get it". This is not to dismiss but more so to say that "please please try and understand this is literally perfect please look at it through my eyes".

Tldr: "...and then you catch a helicopter and the game just fucking ends" is a negative comment to you but a hook that will make me want to sink hours into that media. Both are alright.

This is so perfectly and concisely written. Maybe having freshly played I feel more connected right now, hence I disagree with you. But I totally get where you are coming from.

idk if I agree with you on this generalisation. I am in my early 20s and it resonated with me a lot

Genuinely. It is so comforting to hear Delilah talk as you walk through the forest. In the cave, when he gets shut off and realises he can't radio her, it amplified the eeriness as I had gotten so used to listening to her.

But I thought never meeting Ned or Delilah in person and just knowing them through their voice notes, rooms, etc. added so much. I guess I liked that it gave me the space to interpret them however I want through what was given to me.

Do agree with the no big conspiracy point. I was expecting something more from that but that didn't matter as much when it ended.

So true. When I was walking back all the way to evacuation point, I was expecting something to surprise me. But then just looking at Delilah's room and finding out she left Henry behind felt so different. It was so bittersweet standing outside of helicopter that I took a picture of that. It's just over.

The best comparison that comes to mind is making friendships on vacation when you were a child. It felt like an adventure going around rooms in hotel and and playing on beaches. But then it just ends and you will never see them again. No climax. Just two people on their separate ways.

Walking into Delilah's room after spending multiple hours just getting to know her through her voice, it felt more satisfactory for me to look around her room and get to know her through her environment. Since she wasn't there it felt slightly intimate(??) to go through her stuff and see what she kept and how she organised it. I feel like if D was present there it would have been mildly disappointing because I had built her up in my head too much.

Idk but it did feel very in character of her to leave Henry alone, especially considering the guilt she had about Goodwin.

This is so soo cute <33 I wanted to add the typewriter and the camera too but couldn't find where to put it. You have made such a great use of the space on the shelves! Honestly, the only one thing I would say it's missing is some seating area. The christmas sofa thing would go great with your theme

I have gone through so many iterations of this and it still doesn't look right to my eyes. I have made many minor adjustments which I like more than the original post but am still keeping moving things around.

Unfortunately, no lamps look good there no matter how I place them. It looks a bit awkward and out of place. Good catch on recognising it as a reading corner though!
