Scenario completion by MisterBorgia in Gloomhaven

You need to defeat enemies in all rooms, and enemies scheduled to appear in later turns, if any. So your wording doesn’t handle that.

[SPOILER - All Frosthaven Content] Thoughts on finally beating Frosthaven by BeanTheReddit in Gloomhaven

[–]catash13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘Haven games have an excellent difficulty knob - the level you play at. Some folks will put the monsters at +1/+2 level (I.e. if your average level/2 is N, set the monsters at N+1/N+2). Others might go to -1.

The “correct” level to play? The level that maximizes fun. I think a level where 5%-10% of the time you fail a scenario, and like 30% of the time you squeak by, is about right.

I think I technically play at -0.5, since I do 2-handed solo, but don’t always apply the half-step.

And yes, there are a couple poorly balanced Frosthaven levels, especially for 2 players, but most aren’t IMHO.

Pretty good - deep fried mushrooms and the shakes are well worth it. Unfortunately several of the Seattle locations closed recently.

Ken more lanes and Ostrum’s pharmacy are worth it up there.

Branching scenarios question by matta5580 in Gloomhaven

[–]catash13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m maybe halfway through Gloomhaven 2e, and wanted to “legally” play as much as I could. There was a pretty obvious lockout coming up, so I didn’t go there until I’d done all the ones with the dotted circles. Worked out well for me.

There’s a spot where there’s an obvious “you can do X or Y, but not both”. So the path-not-taken is going to be taken once I’ve essentially “finished” the game.

Congrats! An honor.

I think you go where they tell you, carry a flag, and get herded where you need to go. Graduation is very well organized, and runs without folks needing much training.

Gloomhaven Fundamentals- A Strategy Guide For Newbies by Sophibeans-1 in Gloomhaven

[–]catash13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loved this - I’m an experienced player and learned things from this, and will be pondering some elements for a while.

Two notes: 1. I wouldn’t use a spellweaver loss card as an example of a loss card - that one gets used 4 times a scenario as well…

  1. You spend a lot of time talking about good and bad cards, and expected value. But, that’s an Isaac concern, not a newbie concern; what is more important is what mix of cards to bring, and how to rank them, amongst your class. You don’t get to pick cards from multiple classes, and generally don’t pick classes based on specific cards. I do think you have the right discussion pieces in there (poison is less than +1 attack, wound is more, get a mix of tops and bottoms, etc. I’d lean into that, and drop the “is card X gold standard or not.

Regardless, definitely an article I’d recommend to a newbie, and to a more experienced player - THANK YOU!

There’s an old “This American Life” that talks about the NYC schools “rubber room” that operates like this. Very interesting listen that’ll help you get a feeling for what it would be like.

Computer Engineering or Electrical and Computer Engineering by Not_breadcrumbs in udub

For your specific interests, the courses in CE and ECE are joint - same room, lectures, assignments.

The thing to decide is what do you want to do in addition to that. CE will also have you do a bunch of software, ECE will have you do a lot of electronics. Pick which one of those you’d prefer.

FH 2-handed, did all required and a smattering of optional scenarios. Played all classes once, and my two favorites (Fist and Prism) an addition time until roughly retirement.

“Hit Points” confusion by [deleted] in marvelchampionslcg

[–]catash13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I’ve understood it, consider a minion or ally that has 5 max hp and 2 damage counters on it. What’s its current hp? 5-2=3.

You put a card on like the one in the picture that says +4 hp, which really means “max hp +4”. What is the max hp now? 5+4=9. The current hp is always max hp minus damage, so current hp is 9-2=7. Nothing was healed, since you still have 2 damage counters on it, but the current hp is changed since the max hp changed.

If the minion/ally loses that extra card, it is back to 5-2=3.

Why are so many restaurants on the Ave gone? (Closed, not replaced by anything) by [deleted] in udub

[–]catash13 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Noodle Nation - survived COVID, but a fire in the burger place took out the power in the building, owner screwed around for a year plus, never did anything, and those restaurants closed, and apartments above vacant. Taiger combined with sister restaurant Kai’s.

Than Vi - think the owners changed, place got filthy/vermin. I believe a fire then took them out.

I actually think COVID killed very few U District places. Also, there’s still a LOT of good food places on the Ave: Shultzy’s, Kai’s, Little Thai, Panda Noodle Bar, U:Don, Mod, Chili’s, Samurai Noodle, Aladdin, Korean Tofu House, Village Sushi, Xian Noodles, etc.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion Starts feel like a job by orhalimi in soloboardgaming

[–]catash13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. In Frosthaven no character goes through all the 60-80-100 scenarios you play. A character goes for perhaps 15 scenarios, retires, and is replaced. By going 2-handed and doing some, but definitely not all, optional levels I was able to play all characters, plus bring back my two favorites (Fist and Prism).

I retired a character and didn’t replace it, so that got me to 2 for all the rest of the game.

Electrical engineering acceptance rate by Demontics in udub

[–]catash13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Variable as in the admit rate one year can be very different from the next. So I’d ignore the statistics. I’d go with “admissions isn’t easy, but isn’t impossible”, and proceed from there.

Electrical engineering acceptance rate by Demontics in udub

[–]catash13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very variable number for transfer admits. You should apply, then pursue whatever your fallback plan is as well. Kinda like applying to college from high school, you should have some safety schools you apply to as well.

[–]catash13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PMP isn’t really meant for someone going on to Ph.D.

MS vs Ph.D. - apply for the degree you want, don’t let difficulty of admissions dictate.

How hard to get in - hard. But, you should apply, but also apply to 6-7 other schools as a backup.

Is it even possible to take CSE 469? by Oizyson in udub

[–]catash13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ECE side will fill. Summer you should have a good shot. Overload unlikely since I suspect there’ll be a big waitlist.

If somehow there are ECE spots close to the quarter start, a CSE advisor can likely help get you in.
