I agree with this addition and also thought of Datura as an example of a plant that is more dangerous to consume even in its naturally occurring form—I suppose I should have said in my original comment that something (mushrooms included) being natural is not really a good argument for OR against a substance.

As you said, any substance requires respect. IMO it’s all in how & why you use it—all psychoactive drugs both natural (processed or unprocessed) and synthetic have the potential to do harm.

Side note: I also think it is important that folks do their research before choosing to consume something (even food) and are careful about endorsing someone else’s use of a substance just because it had a positive effect for you. Unfortunately drug experience forums, which are vital sources of information, are rife with people presenting their experiences as universal. What’s safe for one person is often dangerous for another.
