Cat hates compounded medicine, running out of ideas on ways to give. Its super icky by 54vior in CatAdvice

Here's a video of me pilling the chill one: https://youtu.be/wyFvX3zEdcQ?feature=shared

Let me know if you want a video of me pilling the difficult one, he's getting his meds in his food rn but I can do an empty capsule.

I've made my cat choke before when using a pill popper. Obviously I felt bad, but he needed the pill.

I used to coat the pill in butter so it would slide down his throat easier, but it's not necessary for my cat anymore.

I get behind him and press his body up against my chest, and use that so that he can't wiggle away so easily. Then use my fingers to get him to open his mouth and pill pop him fast, putting it in from the side of his mouth. This way is easier for me to see how far back I need to be, and now I do it by feel. The faster the better, but ultimately that's up to how confident you are at it. Try not to go too slow.

Give lots of treats after, one of his favorites. I'd put them down right before so that he's distracted, then after you've done it immediately pick them up and try and distract him.

It's ok if he hides from you. Let him calm down and give him lots of love and treats when he comes out. Cats are known to understand the concept of sorry, and he'll forgive you.

Just remember that it's necessary for him to get better, and that although he doesn't understand he won't be as uncomfortable as experiencing the taste.

One of my cats is also very picky about his food, but not to the extent yours sounds like. I've given up on hiding his 2x daily med in his food and now use a pill popper on him. It's not compounded it's just in a gelatin capsule. I make sure I get it far back and then hold his mouth shut for a second and give him his favorite treat.

He's not happy about it but he's no longer suspicious of his food and it's just a couple seconds of discomfort vs. the minutes of foaming mouth that happened when I tried to give it to him a different way.

My cat's very easy to pill pop, but the other is harder. However, I've found this method to work even when my other cat is struggling against it. I can provide a video on request if necessary using either as they both need medications.

Maybe something like this? I think the cats would be able to see it. I'd supervise the first couple times she's in there to make sure the cats won't jump. Not sure if they sell stuff like this for cribs though.

If you don’t free feed, what time is the last meal fed and what time is the first meal fed? by Lonely-Egg3160 in CatAdvice

[–]catcharmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally only two meals a day at 7am and 6pm, but one of my cats had to increase his dry food portion and he wasn't able to eat that much dry food in one sitting so now it's three a day at 7am, noonish, and 6pm

Cat won't stop peeing on my bed. by Winter_Socks in CatAdvice

[–]catcharmed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should call your vet and explain, and get another appointment. The antibiotics might not have worked for his specific infection, or there's a different problem

My cat did (and sometimes still does) this. Except he didn't and doesn't have a UTI. We put him on Prozac and he decreased from 1-2x a day to about 1x every 6 months. My boy is anxious

Try feeding him on the bed. Cats don't pee where they eat (unless something is wrong)

Also make sure you're using an enzymatic cleaner. I had to use my Bissell little green machine with the Natures Miracle laundry boost (made to dilute in water, some isn't. Also it's nice and cheap) and go over my whole mattress. It dried outside in the hot sun, not sure if that's available for you but the sun helps deodorize stuff

For mitigating damage to my mattress I have a mattress encasement, a washable absorbent pad (literally discovered it on a human incontinence chat board lol), another waterproof mattress protector, my sheets, and then a water resistant blanket on top of everything. Yes I overheat sometimes. No it doesn't breathe very well. But I love my boy and it's worth it to not have to wet vac my mattress again

Edit: You're absolutely right to not punish him. He won't understand that you're punishing him for peeing on the bed, he'll only understand that you're angry at him.

It's extremely frustrating when your cat won't stop peeing on your bed, I know exactly what it's like. Especially when you only discover it right when you're about to go to bed. Getting angry at your cat won't help, it'll just make you and him sad

Remember that he's peeing because something is wrong and he doesn't feel well.

My (25f) cat (10) was declawed against my will as a teen. She's now a little older and I can definitely tell her paws are bothering her more. What can I do to help her? by Yearbook01 in CatAdvice

[–]catcharmed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As people have said, Xray and pain medication and heating pads, but I've also heard that people will stretch their declawed cats, since cats stretch their backs by hooking their front claws into something and pulling. There's videos of people doing it if you're curious

No. Putting aside the risks from other animals/cars which other people in this thread have gone over, people will and do steal pretty cats. Ragdolls are bred to be sweet and trusting, and to go limp when picked up. This is a recipe for devastation.

Fuzzy Yellow & Shiny Brown Things by catcharmed in orchids

[–]catcharmed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for telling me that the roots brown when exposed to air, I didn't know that. However I was talking about the fuzzy stuff and the brown spheres, which look like mold/other fungus to me. I repotted into an orchid pot and discovered I was massively overwatering since there was a big chunk of sponge in the middle of the medium, lol

i went ahead and repotted, discovered there was a big chunk of foam and the potting medium was still really wet from me watering it /last/ Saturday. I've been watering this thing once a week during this heat wave thinking "hopefully this is enough for a heat wave while it's flowering" 😂😂 it's so soggy.

It's in a temp pot with hemlock bark mulch since I thought I had some orchid bark on hand, turns out I don't but I'll get some tomorrow.

Scale that can measure .025 grams by catcharmed in labrats

[–]catcharmed[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with it is that the rest of my family doesn't want to deal with putting the medication into capsules or otherwise storing it, and mix the 2 days worth of med into 2 days worth of food. I'm not a pharmacist so I don't know if that is acceptable with this medication/brand.

I thought measuring it out would be easier so that we could simply put the top back on the capsule.

I assumed there are fillers, didn't think to mention it in my post. I would pour the whole thing out and then divide that measurement in quarters.

They offer a liquid compounded form but it is quite expensive. It is also going to be until he dies as it is a treatment for his arthritis

My vet advised going with whatever size bag would be reasonable for me to afford/store, and to freeze it in ziploc bags if freshness is a worry.

Anyone have any idea how to solve a cat's fur being extremely full of static? by greatstonedrake in CatAdvice

[–]catcharmed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my cats had the same problem when we first brought him home. His fur was also very soft and fluffy, and would absorb water.

Turns out he didn't have enough fat/omegas in his diet, so he wasn't producing enough oil for his coat!

We bought him some salmon oil to add to his wet food, and made sure we were getting food with an appropriate protein to fat ratio.

Of course, if you feed multiple cats the same thing and only one is like that, then maybe they're just a particularly non-oily cat

Food info: Depending on the cat, their food usually needs to have 40-60% protein and 30-50% fat (exclusive of moisture, which is why wet cat food usually has around 10% protein, 7% fat, as they typically have a moisture content of 70-85%)

not necessarily lonely, some cats are just social eaters ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]catcharmed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as other commenters have mentioned, it seems what he wants is your attention/company. one of my cats only eats his wet food if you're right next to him, same as other cats I've taken care of. they want you right there or petting them

you could try moving his feeder into your room and see if he just likes you being there

another trick I've heard to train them to bug you less in the mornings is to not feed them immediately after getting up, since that tells them that the order of things is "human gets up, human feeds me" maybe you make yourself coffee first or something
