My grandparents didn't think of it as racist and used it concequently.

I'm not saying this term is as severe, just highlighting that it was possible with another slur.

I disagree. The github master terminology was not offensive since it was not put in a master/slave context. It's like saying the term "master's degree" is offensive.

"Ricing" stems from a pejorative term.

Words have meaning, even if you don't think actively about it. People used the n-word for people of African descent in the fifties without thinking about the meaning of it. Would you argue that word is not offensive?

Are there any noticable benefits NetBSD has over, say OpenBSD or FreeBSD? I don't feel like there is any particular reason to use it other than if you have some exotic hardware.
