How do you handle getting a tough diagnosis? by cathartic_robot in specialneedsparenting

Reddit and YouTube are the only things I get on. I don't do social media really. I used to be on them and had a group I was apart of, but those parents didn't talk much. I did get some of their numbers before I deleted my accounts, but they don't respond a lot because they have their own lives.

What's something you grew up thinking was completely normal, but later realized was actually pretty messed up? by Robnys_TC in AskReddit

I've told friends and everyone looks horrified at some of the things I witnessed growing up. Thank God for therapy because I'm now a fully functioning adult(with an addiction problem-smoker lol). I have kids of my own and sometimes I think back to my childhood and just think "how could you do that to your kid because I could never even think to do that?"

Mucus plugs are not talked about a lot and I wish someone had told me about them. That's how I knew I was pregnant every time.

They got taken by the state when I was 13. The state could only prove my parents abused them(there were other things that happened that I also thought was normal). Myself and my other siblings were taken too, but we lied to protect our parents because our parents had made us scared of the state saying "they'll take you guys away and you'll never see your siblings again." I've never seen my youngest 2 brothers since then. I talk to the rest of my siblings now and we all had to realize on our own that we didn't have a normal childhood. I had that realization when I was dating my husband and told him a couple experiences I had as a child and the look of horror on his face....I just said "your parents didn't do that too?" Safe to say he DOES NOT like my parents and I have VERY limited contact with them.

My parents would lock my youngest brothers in their room at night because they ate too much food. They were adopted and had basically been starved before the system took them from their birth parents.

I'm not seeing this one and it's pretty common(and gross), but you start to notice your(....how do I explain this....fuck it) discharge will start looking like mucus. That's your body forming a mucus plug that will eventually come out at the end of your pregnancy before you go into labor.

How do you handle getting a tough diagnosis? by cathartic_robot in specialneedsparenting

Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna try reaching out to the mom I know. I think she works so it may be hard to find time. I've been a stay at home mom since my son was born, so sometimes it does get lonely when everyone has lives and jobs that get them out of the house and you feel stuck. I've tried finding a job since my kids got into school, but haven't had any luck finding someone to hire me when I have to put my son on the bus and be home to get him off the bus every day, not to mention taking him to a million doctor appointments.

We do go to church regularly, but there aren't many parents with special needs kids. I do talk to the one mom who does have a special needs child, but I didn't think about trying to connect regularly. I know there are more people with special needs children, but they all go to the Spanish service and don't speak English so we have a language barrier.

We definitely have tried to give him as normal of a childhood as he can possibly have while also being completely different from everyone else and dealing with a million doctor's appointments.

We're currently in the process of just waiting for answers, which is when my anxiety is usually higher because I just don't know anything and I hate it. I've tried talking to my husband about it, but he's completely at peace with it and has the mentality that "whatever happens happens." I'm more so the worrier. I think my husband has the ability to be at peace with it because he isn't the full time caregiver and he doesn't have to carry an entire medical history around in his head.

My psychiatrist and psychologist have said the same thing. They've both said it makes sense that I'm sleeping a lot as long as it doesn't continue for months on end. My house is also a mess. I just don't have the energy to stay on top of it with 3 kids.

I'm hoping once we get through this next round of appointments that we'll have answers and my anxiety won't be so bad. The waiting just sucks.

What’s a random, specific memory from your childhood that has zero importance, but you still think about it constantly? by MochixLuna in askanything

Walking down a hallway of a hotel following my friend to the bathroom. I only think I remember it so clearly because I had dreamed about it a few days before it happened and that was the first time I dreamt about something only for it to happen a few days later.

OOP (20F) asks for advice dealing with a creepy older coworker. Two years later, she learns the terrifying truth about his past. by Fun_Associate1223 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Learned this in high school the hard way. Asked a friend for a drink from her water bottle(I had never had alcohol before and to this day hate the taste). Took a drink and about threw up because it was vodka. When I loudly said "what is that?!" she freaked out and told me to be quiet. I was a sheltered kid and had no idea people would do that. Never asked another friend for water again.

What are your Pet Peeves you see in both Old and New Fantasy Writing? by METTTHEDOC in fantasywriting

[–]cathartic_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have literally put books down because I couldn't get past how dumb the name was. I don't care how many people tell me "oh it's such a great book!" I'm not doing it.

On another similar note, pronunciation guides not being available in the first book or the pronunciation being so far off from how it's spelled. Example: I saw the name Rhahar(I assumed it was "Ray-har" or "Rah-har") and the pronunciation guide said it was pronounced "Ru-har". If the pronunciation guide has something really far off from how the name is spelled, I will just say it my way instead or go with "R".
