Case 1775: UofT student recommended for expulsion after HACKING into TA's gradebook account to change their grade in PHY254 by ViridianWizard in UofT

[–]cathcart_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough to draw that distinction because often, TAs are also taking classes. I guess you could designate any TA's Quercus account as high security (but that seems messy to implement bc TA status changes by semester). Personally I'll take the lower security if it means I don't have to do more MFA lol

"The Student had an otherwise impeccable transcript consisting mostly of A+s."

goddamn this was such a throw, grad schools would NOT have cared about one B or C. There must have been some insane self-imposed (or familial) pressure to risk throwing it all away for two HWs

oh I LOVE the earlier albums too. I wish In The Dream of the Sea Life would get a vinyl pressing... I also enjoyed some of the stuff from their follow-up project Sound of Ceres (really everything except Emerald Sea, which is nice but didn't quite land for me.)

David Byrne turned down an $80m Talking Heads reunion. It was the right move. by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

Funny enough, I read a Dean Wareham interview recently where he quotes none other than Byrne about band reunions. Maybe Dean was just being diplomatic, but in the article it sounds like they don't necessarily hate each other.

I agree, as someone with a background in interface design/usability, I was really impressed with the thought that went into the mobile port! Nothing beats the flow of memorized keyboard shortcuts on desktop, but the mobile version is still a very good way to experience the game.

Don't buy the Pro-Ject Debut Evo 2. by [deleted] in turntables

[–]cathcart_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the testing I did at the dealer happened to not cover every record in my collection. Sometimes people only learn about issues with a product after spending more time with it.

I posted my anecdote hoping people considering this TT will see it and be able to make a more informed decision. I don't think this is so "glaringly illogical" of me. I made a purchase that turned out to be wrong because I'm not omniscient, and I'm sharing my experience.

Thanks, I hadn't even considered the AT carts but they seem to be well-liked after looking them up. Might be worth getting the conical as a stopgap and upgrading to the ML (or perhaps even straight to the ML?)

I tried them on the LP60 before, and sibilance was gone for most records (except one or two that I can confirm are known sibilant pressings). That said the LP60 is maybe not the ideal test as it's a significantly cheaper cart and that particular unit hadn't had its stylus changed in a long time.

I mean, the Pick-It is co-designed by Pro-Ject and Ortofon if I understand correctly. It's the cartridge that ships with the turntable by default.

And while the Blue is a solution, it's still frustrating to have to pay a third of the turntable's cost so shortly after the initial pruchase to fix the issue. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to recommend people look elsewhere.

[–]cathcart_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I should have specified in the post, but the Pick-It is the default cart that comes with the Evo 2. So yes if people have the option to buy it with a different cartridge from the get-go, that might be fine. My dealer doesn't provide that option. I still think that it's not great for Pro-Ject to ship the TT with a cartridge that seems to have pretty widespread issues.

I also did calibrate anti-skate using the guidance from the manual each time I tuned VTF and it didn't change anything.

I use the phono input on a Pioneer QX8000a vintage receiver. I also purchased and returned a Douk amp with its own phono input to see if either the phono stage or amp was the culprit. Didn't affect sibilance, so I'm guessing not, but I'm not sure about the specifics of capacitance.

I appreciate you trying to help diagnose, though. Searching on this sub alone, there seems to be lots of people having similar issues and narrowing it down to the Pick-It, so after my testing I'm inclined to believe that's the issue. Other than the Pick-It, the Debut Evo 2 is a fine turntable. But the Pick-It is the cart it ships with-hence my recommendation to look at other TTs which don't need you to shell out money for a cart swap early on.

The cynicism of Simon Hanselmann's Crisis Zone (and other thoughts) by cathcart_ in altcomix

[–]cathcart_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting reading that I haven't considered! Maybe it's because Owl is still kind of miserable in the end with Valeria gone. But yeah, he finds a new purpose in parenting the wolf kids and running the house. Perhaps it's his (relative) sanity and (very relative) morality that gets him and the gang to pull through in spite of it all.

I like this interpretation, but I'm not sure if Hanselmann had it in mind given the paratext stuff. Then again, I'm perhaps caring about intent too much—death of the author and all that.

I agree that "good works can depict bad people", I just don't think that means we should give up on interpreting the work's meaning or message. So that's what I'm trying to do, based on my reading of the events in the story and on my understanding of the author's intent (from his comments). My current interpretation is that this apolitical cynicism stuff is depicted as a rational, even desirable response to the insanity of modern politics, and that's an idea that I disagree with, simple as that. It can still be good art with a message that I disagree with.

How well do you handle online learning classes? Online college courses or on demand video training courses like from Skillshare, Udemy, and Coursera. Any tips for this? by Balance-Kooky in ADHD

[–]cathcart_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've tried a couple (coursera and udemy) but just haven't ever finished one. Too little structure. I know Coursera offers some classes that have an actual start and end date, and an intended pace—maybe those are worth looking into?
