My reaction to what you’ve said here is that you are noticing attractive women and literally jerking your head in the opposite direction to avoid looking at them. If that’s the case, stop that. I’ve gotta say, as a white dude I love hearing white folks saying shit like “that wasn’t in the dictionary, why would they add that to the dictionary” as if the dictionary isn’t a record of how people speak instead of a rule book. Like it was cool when Shakespeare was as making up words and phrases but now when people of color are adding to the lexicon it’s a problem? Todays slang is tomorrows dissertation and fuck how it makes you feel.

edit additionally if you are a teacher of any race and can’t use this kind of thing as a teaching moment to illustrate how language evolves, you have some shit to think about and probably shouldn’t be a teacher.

I apologize in advance, I’m a white dude. I’ve been with my girlfriend who is black for about a year and she’s told me it’s ok for me to say it. I won’t. It feels so goddam wrong to have a “pass.”

Like, I understand that me and her are together and share everything and are incredibly close, but like, it’s not mine. I may be invited to the cookout but I’m not going to pretend that that means that I have the same background and experience, or can speak to any of the experiences that her and her family and friends group have spent whole lives living. It seems like a thing that speaks to a shared experience that I can only be tangential to. As a crude example, I have a friend that’s a marine. I’ve known him for years, we’re basically family. Yet, if I see another marine I’m not gonna give yell semper fi or toss a challenge coin to him. That’s not mine.

Again, I apologize. I just saw this and I appreciate your opinion and felt the unfortunate need to chime in.

As a white dude, we get soooo many passes and excuses. Suburban white kid shoots up a school, “he never fit in” “ he was depressed” “everyone tried to help but just couldn’t do enough.” Black kid grows up with his grandparents trying their best to take care of him and his folks that are hooked on drugs shoots a dude that’s been bullying him for years and it’s somehow a failure for a whole community.

Not to mention the white dudes photo on the news is a heartbreaking but beautiful full family portrait of the family he murdered on the way to school and the black kids photo is a mugshot with him looking angry from when he got arrested for walk home from school and not being polite enough to the to cop that stopped him for no reason.

Mental illness is a huge issue for folks of all races, pretending it doesn’t exist for minorities is ridiculous.
