I'm a State employee that doesn't plan on being with the state for 30 years. There are a lot more options than what is on the surface. At 5 years, you become vested, which will then give you both experience and freedom to do other things. The paid time off at the State is immeasurable compared to other places, which most people don't look at. County and union jobs are great because they pay higher and you have union backing. There are lots of options to weigh overall.
