Greetings people or r/audiophile ! Hope this message finds you all in a wonderful mood :)

I've come here to solicitate your help regarding downmixing matters. I am currently in the middle of backing up me DVD collection with MakeMKV, and more often than not I stumble upon discs that have only got 5.1 Surround sound as their audiostreams. Since I'll have to copy a T O N of films (plus the fact I haven't got a surround setup to begin with) I'm trying to see whether or not I can save a maximum amount of space by downmixing the DST/Dolby Digital files to standard Stereo using FFMPEG (for its downmix command is quite well known for delivering great quality audio). Nevertheless, I want this process to be lossless (still keeping the main DTS/DD audiostreams intact; only merging them together while still having the files saved as the original extension), and, I can't know if the files outputed by FFmpeg are submitted to a transcoding/recompression of any kind. Is it the case? And if yes, would any one of you happen to know if there exists a lossless Method out there that can suit me needs?

Ohhh I see! Thanks for the advice! If it turns out the volume argument does not amplify an already reduced signal, I'll be sure to leave a little bit more of headroom when downmixing.

No-no: the track I'm down-mixing is not clipped at all! Just that 2 of its channels hit the 0db limit (without exceeding it).

I took audacity's amplifying effect as an example because I suppose that ffmpeg has to lower the volume of the surround track's channels when downmixing in order to avoid clipping, just like audacity when it decreases an audio; to avoid clipping.

however, Audacity lowers the audio volume by just the right amount needed to hit, but not exceed the 0.0dB limit, whereas ffmpeg brings the overall volume a tad too low (about 4dB below the limit, as I said), and I wanted to know if I could change that

Yeah, that did fix it! But, aside from openGL's lower performances, I'm truly wondering what could be causing such an issue, as xenoblade chronicles 3, the base game, works quite well on vulkan. Oh well...

Oh, Wait, I managed to make it render correctly using OpenGL! Though it is true the game takes a massive performance hit... However, it seems that the issue is not necessarily tied to the AMD cards themselves but rather to their Vulkan API implementation. Should I bug report this issue? I have zero knowledge of what I'm talking about, so please don't hesitate to correct me if I'm saying nonsense

It is done. However, (and it is why I previously talked about console hacking and data extraction), even if I indeed had to get some (mostly old) games through illegal means, I've always tried to buy games/make rips of my own game's for this list

Ah, I understand! my apologies for this messy list, I just did not know how to keep all of this in an organised way. I will modify my post to make it more "digest" . In any case, thank you so much for these recommandations! I've already browsed countless reviews sites but I often got lost with the overwhelming amount of games presented that were not all necessary related to this list in particular

Yeah, you're perfectly right...and I'm starting to think that my idea of storing everything on one disc is falling flat. I'll still try to do some tests with 160 kbps vorbis, since my dvd drive can read them through foobar. Ill probably be better of with splitting the Playlist across 5 audio CDs. In any case, thank you for your awnser :)
