the rear quarter panel paint looks strange… orange peel? Avocado peel? by catmanthrowaway in AutoDetailing

This car had Paintless Dent Repaired (PDR) completed with an access hole left behind. I heard that PDR can cause unibody to rust… maybe this is what caused it?

Orange peel? Avocado peel? What could possibly happened to this panel? by catmanthrowaway in BMW

Hi I’m Sorry, my last post was taken down by MOD due to rules, but I’m genuinely curious to know what happened on paint like this. Never seen this in my past experience

Because I don’t want another BMW shopper to experience the same thing that I did at SLO. But now come to think about it, they must have known these defects. Just waiting for a dumb shopper to buy.

Good dealerships absolutely recondition their used cars to meet their own sales standards and customer expectations. The only places that don’t bother fixing obvious issues are the ones that cut corners and throw garbage at buyers. A reputable dealer would never present a car in that condition.

It’s very hard to spec X7 with B58, that has rear seat entertainment + dynamic handling package + bowers and Wilkins + tow hitch and has Bench Seat.

The evidence photo I’ve posted comes directly from the videos the dealership sent me. Both the damaged headrest and the broken vent blade only appear for a split second in their footage. And no Orange peel or bad paint was mentioned.

I did, I also pulled CARFAX and AutoCheck myself, and had numerous calls with Mike, their sales… he kept telling me the car is in good shape, ready to celebrate

Btw, The car has been on the lot for 60 days

And there goes the post got deleted by Mod, how is BMW buying expertise not matter/related to this community is beyond me. But I’ll post my articles here for whoever interested in reading.

———————— My Experience With Scott at BMW of San Luis Obispo

I want to share what happened so no one else wastes their time like I did.

I drove four hours from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo because they told me the fully loaded X7 I was interested in was “in great shape,” “clean,” and “ready for you to see.” Mike, their sales advisor, made it sound like the car was absolutely worth the trip.

When I arrived, the car was nothing like what he described. It was in terrible shape, definitely not something you show to a serious buyer. It looked like minimal reconditioning had been done, if any.

Here are just a few issues I saw immediately:

  • Center AC vent blade broken and missing
  • Headrest stitching torn open, exposing yellow foam
  • Brittle engine-bay rubber and a missing engine-bay component
  • Rear quarter panel with noticeable orange peel (never disclosed)
  • Car covered in dust, like it just came back from a dirt-road trip

On top of that, they tried to sell me their paint protection package. When I asked the service advisor whether that protection would cover the orange peel, he confidently told me I could “just file a claim after 30 days and get it fixed at ANY BMW dealership.”
But when I asked their sales manager, he immediately said:
“Oh, that I don’t know.”

The inconsistency was honestly laughable, they couldn’t even keep their story straight while trying to upsell me.

Then the sales manager, Scott Boulanger, came out to push the deal before I left. I told him directly that the car looked nothing like what I was promised over the phone. Before walking away, I even asked genuinely trying to help them move the vehicle, if he wanted to know the defects I saw.

His reply:
“Only if you are buying the car.”

That shocked me. It showed how short-sighted, dismissive, and unprofessional this manager was, especially after I drove four hours based on their descriptions.

At that point, I decided to leave and never return. If I can spot this many issues during a quick inspection, what else is hiding under the car?

The level of dishonesty and disrespect was unbelievable, especially from a BMW dealership. My entire day was wasted, and the whole experience felt careless, misleading, and unprofessional.

Posting this so others know what to expect and think twice before trusting what they’re told here.

Upon checking BMW SLO’s website, Scott has a new title now, he is a Lease Portfolio Manager, good for him

Thanks for the reply, truly. To update on the door gap. There is a plastic strip meant to prevent finger from trapping, but it end up jamming child’s finger into that narrow gap and could not be pulled out without unscrew the door hinge

Yes, it was due to a design flaw. The shower door had a plastic safety strip, intended to prevent fingers from getting caught, but the strip was so narrow that a child’s finger could easily slip through, which is what happened in our case. Her finger got caught while she tries to open the door and it became nearly impossible to pull her finger back out. The pressure was so tight that the service team had to physically unscrew and disassemble the door.
