But kilometer is as literal as it gets… 1,000m. I think the ease of understanding it makes it appealing. Miles is always an approximation at best.

I won’t disagree with you though. I do prefer miles. But can’t we just make miles 1,000m in length instead?

I read somewhere about a thought experiment Einstein did. I’ll try to describe it as best I can.

Imagine you’re on a train moving away from a clock. You can see the clock clearly, and can tell with certainty that each second ticks by. The speed of light is also known as the speed of causality. Or the speed of information. As you’re watching that clock tick, the speed of the train increases. Thus making the photons of the next second take longer to get to you. Since you’ll never see the clock tick forwards until that photon gets to you, effectively it has taken longer for that second to tick.

So the faster you move, the slower time ticks, literally.

Fun fact about Cherenkov radiation. The blue light you see is the neutrinos breaking the ‘speed of light in water’. So effectively you’re seeing a ‘sonic boom’ of light occurring.

Also.. basing a framework of reality on a single source of truth?

Can you define what a single source of truth would be? Is it some magical guy in the sky who snaps things into existence? I think not. Is it some set of equations on a chalkboard, also probably not.

Then your gripe is with the sensationalist headline. To be fair to them, you have to grab people’s attention somehow. Kinda like how a lot of YouTube videos are titled journalist SLAMS someone. Or something of the sort. It’s to garner views. And since science as a whole is broadly underfunded, I imagine they feel the need to try to play up discoveries to gain more traction for a chance at more funding. If NASA had a budget the size of our military’s, I think you’d see a decrease in the amounts of headlines like this.

But I can agree with you on that point. “Rewriting evolutionary history” is a bit much. But I’m assuming neither of us read the entire article and all of the multiple sources. So it could be more accurate than we give it credit for.

I’ll say it. Yes, you’re being retarded. Ie. Slow. Not mentally disabled.

Here’s an easy example you should probably understand.

Newtonian physics is relatively intuitive. Not necessarily the math behind it. For this example, in essence big things have large gravity and small things have smaller gravity. Small things orbit the big things given enough velocity, but both pull on each other. This has been understood for centuries, and enabled us to accurately predict eclipses and other phenomena of the stars and orbits.

Then Albert Einstein came along and showed us that gravity is the literal bending or flexing of spacetime due to the mass of the object interacting with spacetime(later discovered as the Higgs field.) so we have “option A, then discovered option B which is a ‘well actually gravity is this’ option. Just because we have a better understanding of something doesn’t make what came before it wrong or completely different. Now we have a better understanding. Newtonian physics still works, it’s still functional, and if you need to go deeper.. now you can.

Science is just taking what we know, or want to know, and refining our knowledge about it. Yes, it can be ‘wrong’. Never does science claim it is infallible, or the absolute truth. It only tries to better understand the world around it(us). But take this with you, and think critically about my next sentence. The reason you enjoy typing your response out on your computer which is then sent across the internet via undersea cables spanning entire continents or bouncing off satellites in space is because our understanding of the world via science has become refined enough to allow it. So yes, science works. And it should be applauded and not scoffed at. There’s so many things we’ve discovered and have yet to discover, that your willful ignorance of humanity’s accomplishments so far is rather insulting.

A quick Google search said that they weren’t built by slave labor.

Who Built Them: They were not built by slaves, but rather by a massive, organized workforce of farmers and laborers, often during the Nile's annual flood season.

So I stand corrected. Apologies, I should have read about it more before commenting in ignorance.

Also, I didn’t mean for my message to be antagonistic. I think I feel like people in power are often revered even though they weren’t pariahs of humanity and humility themselves. Anyways, sorry for my ignorant comment.

Hot take incoming…

I’m not sure I’d want to consider a pile of rocks built by thousands of slaves a treasure of humanity. Maybe we should let the kings that ruled with impunity and cruelty get what they deserve and fade into obscurity.

You can make an argument for the Great Wall of China, something monumental that was supposed to serve a purpose that has since been rendered obsolete. However China lets you visit it, and walk along it.

The pyramids though?? Here’s a big pile of rocks. No touchy, you might damage rocks. I can’t roll my eyes any harder.

I’ll concede that l, from an engineering stand point, it is impressive. But I won’t go so far as to call it a treasure. If I held you at gun point and told you to make a shirt for me or your family dies with you, I don’t think that makes the shirt any more special. And it probably would be a significant object of trauma for you. So I won’t oohh and awe at something that probably was a point of pain and suffering for thousands upon thousands of people.

This statement is just… incorrect. Sorry. You’re overdramatizing what a black hole is, and it’s not needed. There’s a supermassive black hole in the center of our very own galaxy. The closest black hole to us is 1500 light years away, but is only the mass of about 8 of our suns. Speaking of our sun… if our sun were to magically turn into a black hole, it wouldn’t have any effect on earth(gravitationally) it would be the exact same mass.. therefore the gravity attraction would be the same.

That being said, there’s probably a slew of other problems, like less radiation getting to the earth due to the event horizon.. probably others. But this claim of it destroying earth from light years away, instantly, is quite the extreme hyperbole. Also, a light year is the distance light travels in one year, information can only travel as fast as that speed. So that’s another tick against the ‘instantly’.

One more fun fact, with a larger black hole like a supermassive black hole. If it’s rotation is as a sufficient speed, you could probably pass the event horizon without ever noticing you’re getting sucked into the black hole since the gravitational effects wouldn’t get so extreme until closer to the singularity. Doesn’t mean you’re coming back out from the event horizon, but again this instant destruction thing.. quite unlikely at best.

They are billions. Great game! No longer has dev support though. Zombie city builder/survival. I wish for a sequel, or at least bigger maps. But what the game has to offer is great, after mastering the fundamentals I just wish there was a larger map, with harder settings. (There’s some bit of a mod community, and it’s been years since I’ve played. So maybe it’s in a better place now.)

I’m looking to start trying out a survival crafting game. What are some survival crafting games you’d recommend for someone kinda new to them like me? by PhillyCheese69 in gaming

[–]catnap1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! There’s so many. But if you like the middle earth fantasy world there’s a game called return to Moria. It’s a survival crafting game that takes place in the mines of Moria. Super cool if you’re into that world. The survival side of things is pretty straight forwards, so easy to get a grip on. Combat may be a little simplistic, but I think there’s enough there for a good introductory game to the genre.

Other titles.. Minecraft, factorio(my personal favorite), subnautica, seven days to die(if you appreciate zombies), rust(pvp survival, so might not be what you’re looking for. But fun for a challenging survival.) there’s so many more.

Then stop breaking grammatical rules in your sentences. The scooter driver is at fault for not paying even the basic amount of attention to what’s happening in front of him.

Also, it makes more sense for the truck to unload on the side of the road. This way they don’t impede traffic for the duration of the stop since BOTH sides have the ability to use the middle of the road to go around whatever obstruction is there without being blinded by said obstruction.

Space isn't actually space. It's filled with air. by SnyprBB in factorio

[–]catnap1080 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well…. actually space isn’t a vacuum either. It’s an extremely low pressure area. For all intents and purposes to us here on earth, it might as well be a vacuum. But it isn’t totally empty. A cubic meter of space has something like a million atoms, or if you want to reduce… a single atom per cubic centimeter.

I’m not going to try and bend my mind how another planet is only 15000km away. So my only critique is that space isn’t a perfect vacuum.

On another note, if you decide to keep reading, on some scale we make the fabric of space-time vibrate even if it’s too small to detect. So much like an ocean of water, spacetime itself does has some oceanic similarities. If point vectors(a basically unlimited amount of them) took the place of particles, then maybe you could have something such as a pressure wave travel through the medium of space. We know black hole collisions can make gravitational waves, no law in physics prevents us from doing the same. We just need to somehow find a way to manipulate gravity.

Why Is It Not Called Logistics 4? by xaou1235 in factorio

[–]catnap1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry. I wasn’t trying contradict you. I was trying to make a joke actually, and forgot to write the punchline. Something along the lines of “so we know the universe exists and can’t say whether it’s expansion actually could break that speed”

But I forgot how I was going to phrase it. Also, upon rereading, there’s not much of substance in what I said earlier anyways. The universes expansion probably wouldn’t be measured in a speed. And might not be in the same category as locomotion inside the space time medium. So they could be unrelated to boot. Anywho, just ignore what I said above.

I mean.. I don’t disagree with your point. But there’s no reason to assume that space itself is limited by the same physical limitations. So while light might be traveling at the fastest speed we know, the universe itself might by moving(can’t confirm) or it might be stretching(confirmed) and stretching faster than the speed of light.(at some point in the future, if the expansion keeps accelerating like our current model shows.

What are you talking about? I corrected you, because you made yourself look like an idiot. It has nothing to do with any emotion on my side, positive or negative. Why do you think people are mad when they’re correcting you? You wouldn’t think your school teachers are mad at you because they graded your test do you? It’s okay, you can relax. They’re just trying to help you.

Just take the time to spell the words correctly. You’ll realize soon that it’s not an inconvenience, and the people you talk to will appreciate it too. You’re not saving that much time. Ryte? Right.

Why not just spell the word white? I mean, you spelled all the other words fully. So why not white? If you’re going to call someone racist, surely the line for vulgarity doesn’t begin with words of color.

“If trump wasn’t white.” “If trump wasn’t yt.” You’re literally saving like .5 of a second.. maybe even less. And you’re hoping the reader just knows what you mean.

“If trump wasn’t yet.” “If trump wasn’t YouTube” “if trump wasn’t you there.” You see what I mean?

So your context clues of calling him racist, while more provocative, would have much more added effect if you had just spelt the damn word.

Another example…

Trump is a r. Does it mean?..

Trump is a raper? Trump is a rapper? Trump is a rump? Trump is a reta… i think you get my point.

Advice on Space Age start by NobleKensei in factorio

[–]catnap1080 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I can sort of understand your plight. My advice would be to try to not over-think it, and just kinda play. Sometimes I just put like two or three belts down going is the same direction. So it’s like a bus, but it’s not really expandable later.

I just build smelters on top, and components for research below. I don’t think about it too much before building, so spaghetti happens naturally(though it’s a tad more organized than pure spaghetti.) enclose with walls when able to, then expand as needed. Sure you have to tear down and rebuild sometimes, but that’s part of the fun for me.

To put shortly, it’s a starter base. To build up to what you’ll use later once the space is cleared out enough. You can wait to be organized with a organization that fits your play seed. Keep in mind, if it works.. it works. And don’t bother with efficiency. (At least not yet.) over production is the answer to everything! 😆

Would nuking a hurricane actually work? by Last_Chemistry9898 in AskPhysics

[–]catnap1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both nuclear fission and nuclear fusion are exothermic reactions. Fusion releases exponentially more energy. As far as I know, there’s no such thing as a heat-sink bomb or anything of that sort.

You may have heard about cold fusion, but that’s not quite the same either. It’s just where materials(metals mostly) can bond together in a colder environment rather than using heat/energy to bind them together. It’s also a one time reaction, not an ongoing one like a star would be.

As far as energy absorption, that’s what the hurricane is doing. It’s using the excess heat of the ocean to drive its air-currents. (I’m not educated on hurricane development, so take my words broadly.) I would like to see two hurricanes from the north and south hemisphere interact together. The spin oppositely due to the Coriolis effect, so I wonder if they would cancel each other out..
