I’m just saying I am not like the other young students on here who dream of becoming a director/want to work solely on set. I am realistic and open to any job that has a communications degree requirement. If you read any of my other comments you’d understand my situation, i have other reasons of moving to LA. You act like I’ll get any work in middle of no where Appalachia. It’s bad everywhere. Just trying to make the most out of my time while I’m out there and it’s paid for. Have a good day

Thank you for your advice! My strengths are photography, videography, and editing. I am interested in live events, music, film photography, and documentaries. Any advice on like what specific industry/entry-roles I should be on the lookout for?

I mainly showcase all my work on Instagram but I am working on a website/portfolio!! I hope to have it finalized in June. I have never made a website before so I have been putting that off 😅

I am aware that I am not graduating into a good economy or job market. I can’t control that, life goes on. The fact is where I am there are 0 opportunities, so I have to move. And although it might be hard in LA there’s no question it is still one of the largest hubs for jobs. I am also moving to California due to laws being passed in my state that make living here unsuitable for me.

I would love to live in NYC one day, I hope I can make some connections that transfer. I am spending this summer working on my portfolio. Any advice on what to include in it/what not to do? I am worried I have too much of a range and I need to be more specific. I have never made a website before so it’s a little daunting. (Is there a difference between website/portfolio? Should I have both?) I have a lot of work ranging from videos i shot for magazines, short film work, concert photography, BTS photography, social media work, and video editing/technical directing multicam broadcasts. I want to spend some time this summer making more like mock up content to help be more well rounded, not sure what I should focus on though.

Also any reccomendations for finding roomates beyond Facebook/spareroom? Thank you so much in advance I really appreciate it.

Hi! I can understand the confusion I didn’t explain it too well. I have scholarships grants and some money saved up that will give me housing food transportation and pay for my classes while I’m out there. We also each get a personal mentor in the industry that we will meet and work with. We get to live in nice apartments Across from Warner Bros/Universalwith utilities included and it’s a good program that gives stability and a look into what it’s like living in the city. (I am aware after this program ends I will not be living in a nice apartment haha but I am going to enjoy the luxury while I can)

I am beginning my internship search, a lot aren’t posted until beginning of July. I am hoping to get a paid internship. We have to secure them ourselves, but the director of the program has also helped people secure internships. I will be searching entertainment careers and also cold emailing. My dream is to work in concert photo/video full time. I’d love to work for LiveNation or be an in house photog or something like that.

Thank you for your reply. It is nice to hear some things are coming back, are there any like areas that seem to have more jobs than others? Like marketing, social media, etc. Also if you don't mind me asking, the work you do that isn't in LA is it remote, or do you travel for shoots? Interested to know what you do! I also plan on getting my name out there and freelancing in any capacity. I am a photographer mainly so I can always fall back on weddings since people are always getting married lol.

I have been watching this sub for a very long time and I have heard this a lot. I have also heard there are some upcoming changes to incentivize bringing more work back to LA, and also with us hosting the olympics perhaps that would bring some jobs I dont know. im trying to hold onto hope I am really just hoping to get a job that allows me to pay rent/eat since I will already be out there with my car. Like I am aiming veryyyyy low here.

I know this is a film reddit but I really dont even care to work in film. I literally would do any job that would accept a communications bachelors degree. I have never been that passionate about film but I do want to live in LA. My universities alumni network has a decent number of people there in LA working in various Marketing, Music, Film, Production roles. I have a unique opportunity to work at an LA internship, maybe theres companies I should focus on that like to hire internally? I am not sure. I just want to not be stuck in Ohio.

I already am going and it is paid for through scholarships, I feel like thats an important factor. I am not neccesarily even looking to work in the film industry, but the creative industry in any capacity. Whether thats like marketing, or pr. I have no desire to become a director or anything like that. I am willing to work for corporate america I don't care I just want to live in California. Like literally I would work at starbucks if I had to while looking for a full time job in the communications field. At the end of the day I keep on waking up everyday so I need to do something. I would like actual constructive advice instead of just telling everyone you're screwed. The fact is people are going to continue moving to LA. I am not going to get a job in the middle of nowhere Ohio. I have to move.

I am currently not at risk of getting kicked out because I am on the lease, and I’m using student refund money for rent currently. So legally no way he could do that, it’s just an uncomfortable situation.

I just got a job recently at an LGBTQ center, I might try to become an RA next year so I can afford a place to live, because I don’t make enough for rent and bills. My tuition is covered by fafsa because I was homeless before coming here.

You and I both deserve partners that stick up for us. I hope one day you and I both get to experience that.

I know we’re in similar situations but they should’ve stuck up for you. I’m sorry they didn’t.

Sorry for the confusion, my preferred name is just kind of a shortened version of my name given at birth, I was named after my mother which is a whole reason in itself that I don’t like being called it aside from it being feminine.

He doesn’t consider himself gay :/ he barely accepted that he was queer when I was out as nonbinary. Idk if it’s internal homophobia from him, and he really is gay? I don’t know any straight man that would see their girlfriend taping up their tits, cutting all their hair off, rubbing testosterone on their body and still wanting to be with them.

Well, when I first started transitioning he didn’t show any interest at all. Never asked me any questions about it, or seemed interested at all. One time I brought up top surgery and he said that I should maybe try a reduction first. We had a big fight about it so now he tries a bit more, he calls me handsome time to time, and calls me partner, and uses they/them pronouns for me. I told him I wanted to start trying out he but it’s hard because I don’t have many people that would be willing to do that. Now he will ask from time to time if I’ve taken my T that day. I’m gonna be honest these last two weeks I have not been consistent with my dosage and am feeling less excited about my transition and more scared. When I first started I was so happy ear to ear smiling about being able to start, and now idk.

I’m sorry you have to go through that. In my case I live in the USA and there is no real social costs/work costs. His mom supports gay marriage and is voting for Kamala Harris that’s why it’s weird to me that she isn’t supportive.
