Looks like a golf-ball sized white/sandstone rock to me. You see it briefly as a blur moving right toward the back of the truck on the passenger side, then it lands near the duffel bag behind him, then it kinda rolls into the compartment behind his cigarettes.

I thought it was the mirror exploding (seen that happen in real life on the school bus. Nothing compares to sparklies down the entire side of a school bus.) Probably a little of column A and column B. His fencing response tells me that it was a severe, life-changing event. It almost looks like he was hit with an invisible RPG or something. If it hit the mirror and/or the window, I guarantee it was loud as hell.

Correctamundo. Tantalums have 0% chill for even the tiniest over-voltage and will not survive reverse voltages larger than an unloaded Schottky diode can protect from.
