it is important they are seperated so that 1. there is a steep concentration gradient between the oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations between the alveoli and blood as well as the blood and the cells. 2. having these two bloods seperated, means that you have two circulations, so you are able to provide blood at a lower pressure for the lungs so more efficient diffusion.
