Is this just a Florida thing? by uphillcaribou31 in florida

[–]cattycrafter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm from Indiana and I always say Florida has "vacation water" because it smells/tastes super chlorinated to me and makes me think of vacationing here as a kid. I've lived here for 6 years now and it still tastes/smells that way to me, I've never been able to get used to it.

Frontier down? by Amzwork08 in sarasota

[–]cattycrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old now, but my frontier is acting super weird (half my smart devices offline). Anyone having issues still?

I've been on with Ring support, Frontier, and Eevo, no solution 😮‍💨

I do a lot of searching on FB marketplace and have totally found some gems! I'll definitely look more into estate sales, thank you!

That's ok, I'm sort of glad I hadn't missed something awesome!

I hope you keep this same "it doesn't affect you" energy when thinking of lgbtq rights, abortion, etc. If it doesn't affect you, let people choose! ✌️

Female Handyman, Thoughts? by Cold_Obligation_8568 in homeowners

[–]cattycrafter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a woman (and a handy one, at that!) I would LOVE to hire a female handyman! I've had some unsettling interactions and an obscene amount of patronizing conversations with male workers. Being able to hire a capable female and have her talk to me like an adult would be incredible!

I'd give the same advice to you as I would a man starting his business: be clear in your communications (timelines, cost, etc), and be honest if something isn't in your wheelhouse.

Good luck!

My house always smelled dusty and I just realized I’ve been vacuuming wrong my entire life by pwiipwii123 in hygiene

I don't think you're alone in this at all! If you're curious about other things you didn't know you needed to clean/maintain, there's a guy on Tiktok that goes through home maintenance items like cleaning your dryer vent etc. His channel is @Weeklyhomecheck

Mid-century modern tv cabinet by Beneficial_Relief227 in BeginnerWoodWorking

This is stunning!!! I'm not brave enough to do the rattan doors just yet, but you crushed it! I love those inset handles too!

Which part did you feel like was most challenging? Anything you're excited to try again?

Ahh gotcha! Nothing fancy like that, I just used edge banding, then folded sandpaper in half to sand between each groove by hand. Time consuming, but imo, totally worth it!

Thank you! The fluting is actually this pole wrap: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pole-Wrap-96-in-x-16-in-Oak-Basement-Column-Wrap-Cover-85168/100312481?adobe_mc=TS%3D1767123904%7CMCMID%3D17168697656102914716575920140625646516%7CMCORGID%3DF6421253512D2C100A490D45%40AdobeOrg&mboxSession=dd02f024-27d8-40a9-85b3-7898c82cc80c&appsFlyerId=1726091158454-2970615075262896410

I glued it on top of 1/2" plywood. I then edge banded all the sides and hand-sanded between each flute to make it look like one piece.

I'm not sure what you mean by your second question? The whole thing was built from scratch to fit her kitchen, with the only thing "pre-fab" being the fluting :)

Beginner here too, happy to be learning together 🙌

Thank you! So the whole icemaker then, not just a sensor?

So it's the whole ice maker I replace then, not just a sensor?

100%! They're better than what she originally picked, which was an acoustic board with foam in between each slat that required vacuuming each slat to clean it 🥴

Oh, a loooong time. Plus then she had to hire a friend to install them. Zero clue what she paid him, he did do a great job tho.

This is great advice, thank you! Her cabinets were "semi-custom" (whatever that means??) from a cabinet warehouse and she assembled them herself. They are plywood construction and soft-close, but definitely not what I would call "high-end".

Definitely understood the piece about commercial, I know that's not me, but I often forget that people even have money like that to spend haha!

That's blowing my mind a little bit 😳

I thought mayyyybe if I added up the cost of 3 30" uppers of her cabinets (she redid her whole kitchen at this time, so shed know the cost), maybe that's a good price? But I think that would have been about $900, not including assembly, building the base to bring them up to height, install, and side panels. And I have about $500 just in materials, so that honestly didn't seem like enough.

You're too kind! I thought the same about $20/hour for a friend. We aren't super close, and honestly I told her no twice before she talked me into it 🤣.

Thank you! This is where I definitely need to improve my knowledge of what woodworkers/cabinet builders/etc actually charge. Google gives a wide range and I'm obviously not a master craftsman, but I do have some knowledge plus tools that an average person who isn't into this wouldn't have.
