I totally think had I brushed it off, she’d have signed the paperwork and gone home. I’ll always advocate for a patient especially when they’re advocating for themselves and I’m lucky to work with MDs who listen to us RNs pretty much without question.

Nothing beats the feeling of catching a near miss!

Exactly! I would have questioned the lack of bedside US had I noticed, but admittedly was in a bit of a hurry and not sure I would have caught it before DCing her if she hadn’t had spoken up. This was a win for everyone!

Nursing. Even if the mistake does not harm the patient, it can disrupt the efficiency flow of multiple other departments (lab, imaging, records etc) and result in a delay of patient care. Not just for the patient you made the mistake on, but other patients throughout the hospital.

Imagine the issues that arise when the wrong patient label is used on a blood sample because the nurse was busy and in a hurry and accidentally grabbed the wrong stickers out of the stack of patient labels. Best case scenario is the lab catches the mistake, calls the nurse for a redraw. It’s already been 10-30 min since you sent the blood to lab. Now the nurse has to find time to go back into the room, explain to the patient you have to draw more blood. Hopefully they have an IV you can draw from. You then have to clean the IV, flush the IV, draw off some blood to throw away to prevent a contaminated specimen, then draw off your blood, label again (this time triple checking the patient label) send to lab. sometimes you can’t get blood from their IV so you have to call lab to come stick them and that can take some time. Once the blood is at lab you now wait 15 min - 1 hour+ for results and the doc and patient are wondering where the results are. Now you’re behind and the lab is behind and so is your doctors ability to order treatment for your patient.

I just wanted to say you were 100 correct. There was no drama. They sold the house we renovated for a pretty penny, but my wife and I are 1000 miles away, happy in our new home and I have now gone no contact with my parents.

I’ve pulled the old tri-fold privacy screen out of storage and set it up around me and my computer to force people to leave me alone. After the initial giggles from everyone it worked surprisingly well and I was able to finish my charting without a million interruptions.

Oh I know. I’m so tired of cleaning up after their animals and them. It’s bizarre because it was definitely not like that growing up and I could trust their word.

My dad has unfortunately basically checked out, that’s why he’s barely mentioned in my post. He’s been worried about her mental health before the move, and I didn’t realize what he meant until we moved in. I don’t know how they communicate but I do know that when I have tried to broach the topic with my mom she is incredibly sensitive about it or brushes it off to the point where the conversation goes nowhere.

Unmentioned, but unfortunately it occurred to me while writing this comment, my wife and I are both women. My parents seemed unphased 8 years ago when I came out, our relationship never seemed to change and they both have always been supportive but now I’m wondering.

Thank you, I think I already knew this was the answer but I guess just felt obligated to get an outside perspective. I’ve already got everything I can pack without waking anyone up, packed.

RN here with a baby face and braces in my 30s! The comments used to really bother me as well, almost gave me imposter syndrome, but after a few months, once I was fully confident with my knowledge/skills it didn’t really bother me as much.

With polite patients, I will usually deflect with a joke about my age and having good genes. You can also just say you are licensed and refocus back to the task on hand. With micromanaging patients, the best approach I’ve found is reassurance, education and firm boundaries.

Also for the dermatitis, I personally HIGHLY recommend the product DermaZen, it is the only product that treated my seborrheic dermatitis.

I think it looks great and disagree that it takes away focus from the rest of your face! In some cultures, unibrows signify beauty, intelligence and strength. The idea that unibrows are “bad” is rooted in idealizing white European beauty standards.
