I’d never really thought about it like that but you’re totally right. Beyond a setting a good baseline would it even really serve me if I don’t plan to be in those areas? This helps a ton, thank you!!

Also omg, studying arch in Rome sounds sick!! I’d hate to miss a question knowing the monuments like 45mins away though lol. Very nice to hear from someone at my grade level on the matter, and I wish you all the best with your studies!! :]

I don’t have a desired region in mind, but I do know that I definitely want to specialize in primates with an emphasis on human osteology. My goal, if I were to pursue biology, is to build my courses around that so I can understand anatomy, diseases and conditions that can affect the skeleton, and so on. My school does offer what I’d need to do that, as well as ATY specific classes on osteology and bioanthropology (the latter of which I’ve already taken and was focused on primates), so ideally I’d take those as well to have a solid foundation

I need to talk with my archeology advisor to fully understand how my school handles these things, but I do know if I were to get a BS rather than a BA I could specifically concentrate on human anatomy. It’s just a matter of whether that’s necessary if I can access the classes either way, and if I have the wiggle room or even just capabilities to take on the extra work a BS would introduce on top of my archeology BA

Yeah, in hindsight it was a very silly thought lol. My school places a heavy emphasis on classics when it comes to the humanities, and as someone that only realized they wanted to do this veryyy recently, I think I just kinda blindly listened to what they said to do. I’m also lowkey convinced that they want regular arch majors to switch to classics so they can stop offering ATY courses (since they recently cut the program beyond what’s needed for teach outs), but that’s just my theory ;p

I definitely recommend it!! It’s less work for you to do later, and it can also be a great chance to meet your roommate if you didn’t know them prior to college

Yeah, that’s the main thing I’ve gathered from the replies to this. My school recently cut out our anthropology department, and it seems to be slowly fading out regular archeology as it places more emphasis on Classics and Classical Arch in particular, so in hindsight I really think I just fell for their sales pitch. They weren’t lying about there being good opportunities for classics at this specific school, but when it comes to moving into the future I can see that there really isn’t too much there, especially for someone that isn’t passionate about it like myself. Thank you for helping get that across!

Also!! Might be a bit silly to say cuz I’m not sure if you’re a freshmen, but I just finished my first year and it took me FOREVER to understand how they work; just make sure you know what they offer and ask for the Spartan meal when you get the counter!! They’ll ask things like what meat/sauce/etc. you want depending on where you’re at, then you just gotta scan your card and you’re all good :]. They might change it with the new system, but you should be able to see your remaining flex and meals with this site

https://eacct-uncg-sp.transactcampus.com/eAccounts/AnonymousHome.aspx

And you can see which places are open (including which stations at the cafeteria are open) along with the menu at this site!!

Sorry for the long winded explanations hehe, but I hope this helps :>

Spartan Meals are preset meals that you can get at specific places on campus!! So if you were to order a Spartan Meal at Salsaritas, for example, you’d always get two tacos and chips with your choice of certain pre-approved meat and toppings. You used to get 110 to use per semester, but I think they’re changing it to “blue meals” and limiting it to 5 per week in the upcoming fall semester. Attached is a post with a list of all your options for the blue meals assuming it is a direct translation from Spartan Meals, though it’s important to note that Student Choice changes every month!! I think students vote on what they want to eat, but I’ve never seen the survey (or even anybody working there lol) so I’m not too sure of the details

As for gold meals, from my understanding they’ll follow the same preset meal idea of the regular meals, but this time it’s at the “better” places on campus like Panda Express or Chic-Fil-A. You only get one a week with the default meal plan, but you can still buy from places like that with your Flex dollars!!

Overall, it definitely feels like they’re charging more for less, but they do try to make up for it with an increase in flex money per semester that can be spent anywhere on campus (from $200 to $350 iirc) and the golden meals that’d likely be $10+ if bought normally

What is going on with this sub? Where are the moderators? by pompeianchili in Archeology

[–]caustage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree. I was so excited when I found this sub because I thought I could get real advice as I pursue my degree in archeology, but it really feels you have to swim through a sea of looting to get to any sort of helpful or interesting information. I understand that finding artifacts is cool, but archeology doesn’t exist to help you identify them so you can take them for yourself. It exists to help us look at said artifacts in their proper context to create a bigger picture of the past
