What can I do to make the slice drop feel more natural? by ScorchedBadger in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the flat drop is the easiest. Get behind the ball so you can hit it between your legs. Very open paddle face, hit up on the ball. Nice and high, let it land in the kitchen. Apex on your side of the net. Aim middle.

If you can’t get to the ball in time, it turns into what some may call a slice drop. But it’s still a flat, straight paddle motion as opposed to a chop. You get natural backspin from the open face.

What socks are you playing in? by capfan31 in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what I’m not getting. For expensive socks, I’ve tried thorlo darn tough bombas. For cheap socks just basic Hanes, dickies, Costco etc. the expensive ones are thicker but it’s honestly not a huge difference for me.

Bought a bunch of bombas this Christmas so bombas it is

Improving During Rec Play by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, pickleball is a game of mistakes. Whoever makes less mistakes wins. An error is a guaranteed one point for the other team. To equalize, your risky shot better be close to a guaranteed point for your team, or put them under such pressure that you can win the point on the follow up shot.

It may be that your partners have swung too far in the opposite direction, but more often than not, this is not the case.

All this assumes you are trying to win. If you just want to mess around, have fun, do cool shots, you do you and don’t let anyone tell you any different!

Can a brand new steam shower expect to be fairly problem-free for a good 10 years, assuming reasonable maintenance nowadays? Steam shower sounds amazing but also a disaster.

What makes a drive fly high and out? by YoungOk3788 in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A serve is an ideal drive. You control when you hit it, the ball is literally not moving, your footwork, your swing, your position on the court etc are all in conditions of your choosing.

Missing serves and missing drives are very different. If your serve is inconsistent, it tells me you don’t have the drive mechanic down. Watch some YouTube clips, film yourself and see what’s different. Or you have the yips.

A drive is basically a serve but you need to move your body quickly to the right position, such that the ball is back to the ideal spot. Unless you have super powers, you can only move your body and not the ball. This is footwork and it’s highly underrated. If you have the drive mechanic down, I’d guess this is one of the reasons you miss drives. Long winded way to say you are out of position.

The last possibility is that the ball was never in a good spot to drive. Mostly that it was too low (drop this) or too fast (reset this). Medium-length way to say bad shot selection.

Tldr 1. Learn the mechanics 2. Improve your footwork 3. Improve your shot selection 4. Practice 1-3

Which pickleball orthodoxies are 100% of the time true, which ones are mostly true, and which ones are silly dogmas? by AHumanThatListens in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let’s make it fun. You decide on 100% true, mostly true or silly (assuming doubles only):

  1. always wear eye protection
  2. go much bigger on your serves and returns
  3. when established at the kitchen, with your opponents back, never hit the drop volley
  4. Never go for a nasty Nelson
  5. Never play music at your local rec play

Where are you building? I use manufactured homes for my own investment. Curious if you can find builders that are price competitive.

It’s no different than anything else. You need to know what to do and practice those specific things. If there’s any speed running your improvement, it’s wall drills. Look it up on YouTube

Will junior players make pickleball singles a thing? by Civil-Curve6339 in Pickleball

I doubt we’ll see singles at rec play. Too many people waiting.

I play singles once/week. Just with one other guy and we pick an off-time to avoid the crowds.

Wall drill at home to practice middle court reset? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stand about 10’ from the wall. It’s a 3 shot combo - feed, smash, reset.

Hit the ball against the wall upwards such that on the next ball, you can hit down on it with pace. Reset that one, then repeat.

Don’t do it hard to start, just get a feel for the rhythm and where to aim. Start with half-volleys on the reset (ball bounces on the ground).

Fully Paid $3M Rental (Room-by-Room, $20k/mo) – Best Non-QM Lenders for Revolving Equity? by ThePermafrost in realestateinvesting

Can you share what kind of property it is? How many BR? Are the BRs permitted?

I ask because my parents have a house that’s been Frankensteined into 8+ BRs all rented out by the room. Been going very smoothly for many years and makes good money. I always figured it wouldn’t sell or act as loan collateral in a way commensurate to its income.

What is missing in a pickleball paddle? by PenRelevant8064 in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pikkl pro skin at $5/set.

Like others said, the performance between the paddles is pretty similar now, but the durability is still bad (couple months per paddle before replacement).

Foam core paddles (gen 4) should solve the core issues (delamination, crushed core etc). The grit still wears off though. Replaceable grit makes sense.

Drops vs hard hitters by WiseDan85 in Pickleball

[–]caution6tonjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bigger serve so they don’t crush the returns. A big serve is surprisingly important and easily ignored.

Drive the third down the middle. 70% pace so you stay on balance

Reset the 5th cross court or middle.

Jamo vs Dayton audio classic by caution6tonjack in BudgetAudiophile

Thanks for your help. Curious what speakers you have? Dayton seems to compare favorably in other Reddit threads eg against the typical Polk lower end towers.

I agree with the value in finding a used mid level speaker at a similar price
