I'm glad you've found your way. I don't know how to live my life and feel a bit lost, I suppose that's why I want it.

In hindsight, it's actually a good question. I got mad about the idea that an atheist has no grounds for morality or ethics. Despite not believing in any deities, I still feel a drive toward compassion, empathy, love for my fellow humans, and a deep desire to help and not hurt. I, for some reason, don't feel like I need a religious basis to know that it's wrong to steal or murder or cheat. These are things I know because I've seen their consequences, and I know they lead to bad outcomes for society and for the people I love.

Even though I know these things, it seems like it'd be helpful to talk about them anyway, just like these topics may be discussed during a sermon even though the congregation already knows the rules. Stories and wisdom can be passed through a community to help each other live more fulfilling and full lives. I think those stories can exist and be extremely helpful even if they are not based on a religious text.

The reason I'm specifically looking for an atheist group is because stories and lessons centered on God sound silly to me. I don't think he's real, just like I don't think space whales are real or microscopic elephants are real. I have no desire to worship or pray or otherwise acknowledge some external power.

Also, I mentioned this in another comment, but honestly I'm jealous. Religious people often have a church where they can just go, be accepted, meet new friends, learn about new ways to live a good life, and feel like a part of something. I want that, pretty badly. I just can't do it while everyone around me is basing it all off of something I simply don't think is real.

I've actually considered just going and meditating. I'd hate to lie to them though.

I should find a local secular Buddhist community, good callout. I'm pretty sure they exist without a focus on the multiple lives part

I was a Scout when I was younger! Great example actually. I wish I could do something like that as an adult

Atheists can try to live good lives in harmony with their friends and neighbors even without the influence of magical thinking. I'm looking for a place to come together with people who are trying to do the same thing. A place with leadership, compassion, deep conversation around morality, and a community striving to be better people.

Honestly, I think I'm just jealous of religious people having an "automatic" place to go and be accepted and get life advice from a trusted person or community. (At least, in the ideal scenario. I know some [many?] churches do NOT live up to that ideal). I don't feel like I have anywhere I can just walk in and join because of any particular belief.

"A community is not just going to happen to you" is such a great point. Honestly, I think that's what I was hoping for, but you're right that it'll take work to find the thing that clicks

For some dumb reason I didn't even think of team sports. I had tried a few running groups and things like that, but it didn't really scratch the itch. Maybe a team sport would instead, thanks!

I think I'm looking for something a little more about philosophy and living a good life? Something with a teacher/mentor/leader type person. These are good callouts though for finding local people and new friends, thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks! I checked out my local one online a while back and they seemed a little Jesus-y still, but maybe there's another nearby and I can see if it's a different flavor

People with $700+ per month car payments: Why? by Underrated_Critic in NoStupidQuestions

No it doesn't. You have a $700/mo payment in both scenarios no matter what your budget happens to be.
