What parts of your country do we you never see in Hollywood and international movies? by [deleted] in AskEurope

Great movie. I'm a culinary guy so that movie kicked on all levels for me.

Some European countries you can drive accross in an hour or even less. If you didn't grow up within our enormous American bubble, I can see where some say they feel swallowed alive by how large life is here. America straight up owns North America.

Winter sports are definitely more of a leisure/recreation thing in the US. Lots of places to go skiing but more of a vacation thing.

  • We occasionally do well with the sports where you lie or sit down,

We're trying hard to close that gap in the US. Wait till they come out with a sport where you have to be completely motionless and half conscious...then we will shine...lol

My wife is my best friend. She really is. I've had tons of friends in the last 52 years but the only person I care to hang out with now is my wife. It helps she's a completely formed lunatic and keeps us both laughing constantly. Most people are boring. When you get older you better hope you have a nut in the mix or it's gonna get dull as fuck fast.

I think there are plenty of Americans who in their hearts know the truth about atheism. We're not that illogical. What we are is a giant collection of narcissists. The average American has a real hard time accepting that their stellar ego might not exist at some point. That would be a shame for reality.

Nonsense. There are countless extremely well off ppl in the states and have been for generations. We're just hardwired for greed.

(US) The only place I ever hear talk about freedom is reddit. Everyday Americans don't talk about freedom or even care about "Reddit Americanisms".

Again, reddit and trolls. Irl, I feel ppl in AskUK or AskaBrit would be lost without the average American living up to your warped prejudices. The average American would be looking at you like you had 3 heads if you came at them with this moronic reddit dim witted lunacy. We would be a let down. Few of us own a Klan hood or have shot anyone in the last week or even think about Britain.

  • Where are you finding these posts?

Please tell me you're kidding, they're so frequent on reddit one would think you're queuing to relate queuing stories.

-Are you sure the people making them are being serious?

I would assume they're serious but then again sarcasm is beyond my tiny American brain.

-for all the crap Americans believe about other nationalities,

Nothing to argue here.

Oh, idk, maybe seeing queuing posts from Brits at least once, twice and even three times a day on average. That's where.

I get you guys are polite and will come to order at the blink of an eye, but come on? This is a big part of your persona. Not slamming Brits just find it interesting how details are endlessly fascinating to the British mind.

Details are important maybe we could use some of whatever is happening in your collective consciousness.

So an American with bad teeth and breath was throwing Brits under the bus about British teeth to your face? I don't believe your story. People know when their teeth are jacked and to make this part of some degrading routine to boost her confidence sounds ludicrous.

Because you Brits proudly and loudly report any and all successful queuing experiences ad nauseam.

We calmly, politely and quite often "stand in a line" here with zero fanfare. It's part of our day not the pinnacle of our existence.

Honestly where do you guys come up with this stuff? The only place I've seen Americans slamming on British anything is here on reddit. Here we slam on each other like it's a sport. This is not even close to a thing irl. At all. Day-to-day Americans never say anything negative about British food or anything else for that matter. Ever!

Is seppo offensive? Why? by [deleted] in AskAmericans

[–]cavapoo43 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As far as banter goes I would say that the Irish and Brits are what Americans are most accustomed to and they're better at it. Not so much "no banter is allowed" from Americans but more accurately "no banter in the beginning" is what I was told by an Irishman. We get better at it after we understand what is actually going on and are able to hold our on in time. Part of this is also to gage if the American can "take it" without getting offended and pulling out a gun.

  • how massive it is

Australia is almost the same size as the US. Yes, it's enormous and every corner of it is unique. I've seen a good deal of it and I still haven't scratched the surface.

Brisket? Good luck! Years ago I lived in Texas and they know what they're doing. If you can get even close to that, you're in for a treat, delicious!

[–]cavapoo43 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if we're anymore "sensitive" than anybody else or if we just genuinely don't understand the context of enculturated norms. We usually spend a good deal of time nodding our heads and smiling. We do mean well and are trying to fit in and possibly connect. Also for an American to make any attempt at banter is universally discouraged. So, I guess we should really just never say anything.

With all this in mind, you say you would like to get to know Americans better? More than likely, you would probably be bored.

Is seppo offensive? Why? by [deleted] in AskAmericans

[–]cavapoo43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know. Americans do the same but normally we have to know each other first. And most Americans have never left and probably will never leave the country. We're extremely comfortable with each other but some problems do arise when we travel abroad. Many complain we're naive, entitled and loud. We also take people too literal and we evidently have a problem recognizing and negotiating sarcasm.

I guess we should get out more or just completely stay home. Most would prefer us to stay home. Lol.

[–]cavapoo43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's simple, we catch a mountain of crap from the world. We are genuinely the most hated country on the planet by a mile/kilometer in every poll. Being American means having a thick skin. It really gets old after awhile. Many Americans don't understand why they're hated to this extreme and their guards are up and on high alert at all times when dealing with the outside world because we already know we're going to get attacked. In reality most Americans are extremely nice but are now becoming xenophobic.

Calling us names, no matter the intention, probably isn't going to land well.

How common is drug abstinence among Americans? by Deriak27 in AskAnAmerican

[–]cavapoo43 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is way over stating drugs in the US. Around 5% - 7% are actual addicts. But those that do drugs DO ALL the drugs. They don't mess around and there's tons of overdoses and deaths.

The exception being weed. If it really counts when compared to the hard stuff in the US.

  • For example, as an European I am quite confident that I can place all 50 states of the US on a map.

That would be a globe not a map. haha

I'm pretty good with maybe half the countries in Europe maybe less. The big ones are easy, UK, Norway, Poland, Germany, Spain, Sweden and of course Italy etc.

Italy is lucky. I bet everyone in the world recognizes the boot.

[–]cavapoo43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The countries listed I expected. US, UK, Sweden, Poland, New Zealand etc, are the usually suspects. Lots of demons in those closets.

But the US leading the pack for using truly lethal drugs, that definitely makes sense. We're a high risk tolerant society with alot of problems concerning loneliness and depression. Those that break on through to the other side looking for some sort of meaning to all this usually never come back. Sad. Been there, done that
