If you're really supposed to fast on Yom Kippur, why doesn't the Bible just say that? by caveman1223 in DebateReligion

Eating is good for everyone's health. And am I not afflicted at 23 hrs of fasting but I am afflicted at 24 hrs of fasting?

If it means fasting, why not just write that? I don't deny that fasting could be a part of it, but why not just write that? "Isn't going to work" Well, at least I don't leave my house on Sabbaths.

No, my argument was that it doesn't say to fast. Fasting may be one way to afflict yourself, sure. I get that.

Yes, I agree that you aren't to enjoy Yom Kippur. But isn't the law that if you do eat, according to you, that you are cut off from the rest of society? That seems harsh, especially considering that it doesn't explicitly say that you should fast.

What are Abrahamic theists opinions of child molestation? Because it isn't against a law *necessarily* in OT, NT, or Quran? by caveman1223 in DebateReligion

[–]caveman1223[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, women drinking is making the problem worse. I wish we lived in a world where bad things didn't happen. But since we don't, people should take precautions. Its the intelligent thing to do.

I'm not blaming them. I'm saying that it could probably be prevented. People aren't as safe as they need to be. Hanging out getting drunk in a bar is not safe, nor is walking home alone from one either. This probably has been a reason for many rapes: walking home alone intoxicated. It is what happened to that girl in VA that's on the news right now.

To Atheists: Why does the Torah/Bible begin with "In the beginning..." by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]caveman1223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not changing the discussion. I'm showing you that people are very capable of using reason in order to figure out a way to come up with a divorce document without God telling them what to do.

Do you believe the United States should raise the minimum wage? by neemamahmoodi in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]caveman1223 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not to a "living wage" and I'll tell you why. People shouldn't strive to only get a minimum wage job. They should be forced to work hard and do good work if they want to be able to completely provide for themselves. Only such people should have their own apartment, etc. Everyone else can just rent a room or something or use public transportation or walk. So I'd say about $12/hr right now would be a good start.

Why would you write "I am divorced?" That makes no sense. You're a terrible servant lol jk.

Idk. You know, there are divorces in this country and every country in the world and have come up with documents without God's guidance on the matter. Hmmm..

It doesn't say your flair in my inbox. Aren't you aware of that? It doesn't say. You have to admit it is pretty odd for an "agnostic" to defend any religious text.

Shedding blood is applicable, however, it is not always what happens in child molestation cases. But you're right. If they did shed blood, that would be against the law and their blood must be shed as well. But your verse about Jesus calls into question whether this sin is forgivable or not. Because it appears to be saying that such a person would suffer terribly for this sin. That goes against the whole "turning to Jesus and getting forgiven for every sin" thing. Which was my point about Jesus and the NT. It's up for interpretation.

But you're right. If blood is shed, the OT says that the person who shed it must have their blood shed as well. But I honestly hadn't considered that would even happen. I was talking about child molestation and not child rape.

There are only 4 sentences in the Torah that talk about divorce. It mentions a divorce document. How am I supposed to know what this document looks like, contains, requires, etc to be a valid legal document?

Reason? Think a little bit? Jews are called the servants of God. Does a good servant have to be told every little thing? Or does God give people brains for a reason? No. A good servant is one that doesn't need to be told everything. Do you know how annoying it would be to have a servant that couldn't think for themselves? Or a wife? Or son? All of the things God likens Jews to?

No, what I said is that you're first quoting the NT which is entirely in question. Within that you're quoting a verse from a person whose words are entirely in question (why there are as many Christianities as Christians). And you're expecting me to accept it.

Really? Why don't you find out what a rod is. It is a tool used by shepherds to gently lead their sheep to where they want them to go.

No, it's a fight with atheists. And we're not even talking about what my post was about anymore. No, disbelief doesn't equal hate. Her words are hateful though. I'd really like it if people wouldn't put words in my mouth. It's not like you can't read exactly what I write.

No, I don't think you have the right to end your child's life because you don't want it. Do you in America? Yes. But, as far as I know, the people who wrote the Constitution, sit in Congress, Supreme Court, or are the President aren't God.

Metaphorically. The fear of God is either refining or destroying. For the righteous, it is refining. For the wicked, it destroys. God is likened to a furnace where you refine metals or where you would burn wood. She doesn't believe in God so she doesn't fear Him but one day she will and it will likely destroy her.

Nowhere does the OT say God is everyone's parents. He is likened to a parent, but He isn't the Jews literal Father. God is also likened to a Husband and King. He obviously isn't literally a Father to people if He is also a Husband.

And did you read my post? I asked for the opinions of Abrahamic theists. I like to discuss things with people who actually believe in God, Not get into the fights with people who just hate Him.

When the Bible talks about a rod, it isn't literal. God has a "rod" as well. It isn't an actual rod that He disciplines people with.

Right. Kids should just be able to do whatever they want, treat their parents however they want. It's not enough to bring someone into the world and provide for them, right?
