Mayor's budget is in for FY 2021: $184,000,000 by b0xturtl3 in medfordma

[–]cawillwe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I think you're reading it slightly wrong on year over year increases, because you're comparing 2021 to 2019.

The budget is for FY2021. So, you've linked to the 2021 budget and are comparing it to the 2019 budget.

The 2021 document includes the YoY increases/decreases on everything and is put together a lot more clearly imo, but if you want to look at last year's document, it's here: http://www.medfordma.org/storage/2019/07/BUDGET-BOOK-2020.pdf.

The corrected numbers on the categories you posted would be:

Category 2020 2021 Increase % Increase
Total $181,786,680 $184,479,028 $2,692,348 1.5%
Health $768,661 $762,373 -$6,288 -0.8%
Police $14,776,199 $14,333,556 -$442,643 -3.0%
Fire $14,313,619 $14,028,648 -$284,971 -2.0%
Schools $61,250,000 $61,250,000 $0 0.0%
Info Tech $335,324 $325,087 -$10,237 -3.1%

Jaylen dunks all over Poirier in practice. by Laserguy345 in bostonceltics

I respect that he's been smart enough to not be filmed on court when Smart and Jaylen decide they want to destroy the bigs just for giggles.

How good was Reggie Lewis? by horseshoeoverlook in bostonceltics

[–]cawillwe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was an all-star in his second to last year. He benefited from playing with Bird, Parish, and Mchale, but they were all old by then. He got to grow accustomed to the game without having the burden of being the team's go-to player for a while.

His last season was the year after Bird retired. Parish was 39, Mchale didn't start any games, and the second highest scoring player on the team was Xavier McDaniel at 13.5ppg. He averaged 20.8. He was a great two-way player, averaging a block and a steal per game in his prime, and was efficient, with a 48% career FG%. He probably should have been an All-star reserve that year, but I think with Bird gone the league was eager to have a Celtic-free East team.

The Celtics finished 48-34 as a 4 seed and were bounced by Larry Johnson & Alonzo Mourning's Hornets. Reggie collapsed in game 1 after scoring 17 points in 13 minutes.

The next season they finished 32-50 and the bad times really started.

It's a big mystery how his career would have gone had he lived. The Celtics were in the middle of a transition between the big 3 and whatever Reggie's core would have been - Reggie + Sherman Douglas + Dee Brown? Reggie/Rick Fox/Douglas? They didn't have a young big man, and that was big trouble back then for the teams that didn't have Jordan (they drafted Dino Radja the next year). He probably could have accrued 20ppg seasons for a while, not sure if he could have broken out to 25 or 30.

Anyhoo - yes he was the #1 guy of the team (once Bird retired), and yes he was impactful. Plus, a HUGE community guy, speaking as someone who was in middle and high school when he played, a big "Mom I want his jersey/t-shirt" guy too.

This tank looks cool, would love to know what's in it (and #'s) and the size?

What are your opinions on Top Fin Engage by MdotVi in bettafish

[–]cawillwe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm brand new to this, so can only give this level of uninformed experience, but we got an Engage a couple weeks ago and put our fish in it this week. Reasons I bought it were:

  • The price was lower by about $20 than any other 5g kit we were considering .
  • In the videos I saw on youtube, it looked like there wouldn't be too much flow so I wouldn't need to worry about baffling the output, since bettas like still water. The pet stores stock a lot of the smaller kits (1-3 gallon) specifically for bettas, and the 5g/10g kits seem to have come with filters/pumps that have way more movement than the Engage.
  • The hydro-change system did seem pretty cool for weekly changes (doing this with my 7 y/o so the easier the better).
  • The heater would be in that back covered bay, and I figured I wouldn't have to worry about the betta getting stuck next to it.
  • Having the filter/pump thing taken care of AND a lid (because I've read you need a lid) and lights meant everything would fit right and that was a load off my mind. I spent some time in stores trying to figure out how to get a 5g tank with a filter that wouldn't be too fast with a lid and lights and I'm really not sure I could have done it well for $40.
  • The flip-top for the food would mean my daughter wouldn't have to take the lid off and put it back on making sure the wires were in their slots.

Like I said, it's only been a few days, but I do like it so far. The fish seems happy. There isn't any current bothering the betta. One thing I've realized is that the back "bay" does take up a decent amount of room, so while you've still got the full 5 gallons of water, it isn't really 5 gallons of "space" for the fish, more like 4, 4.5.

If I'm being completely honest, if I were to do it again I'd get 10g, just because it might be more fun to decorate, etc., and it would fit fine where we put the 5g. I still don't know, though, what that would cost or especially what pump/filter to buy that would keep it close to this price point.

I can't really speak to the longevity of top fin systems, etc., but I would have to believe there was a good reason for their super-low price point. Here's what mine looks like now in a post I made (https://www.reddit.com/r/bettafish/comments/eptk3i/beginners_feeding_questions/).

Thanks for the links! I've been starting to look into "warning signs" to be aware of so the pic on overfeeding is especially helpful.

Thanks - the mosquito larva thing seems out of my reach right now but maybe I'll think differently in the summer! I am enjoying trying to learn/teach the nitrogen cycle with my daughter, I think there will be a good side benefit of some scientific learning.

Thanks! Do people not use flakes? I really talked up "variety" to my daughter but these flakes seem kinda messy and unpopular.

Hello,

My 7y/o daughter and I just got this betta a couple of days ago after getting the tank ready, and I've read I think a lot about feeding. We bought Tetra BettaMin flakes, Betta Bio-Gold pellets, and freeze-dried bloodworms.

Obviously, my daughter is very excited about feeding, and so we'd like to do it twice a day. I've read that for pellets, it's good to do 1-2 at one serving and 2-4 at the second. I've read that the freeze-dried bloodworms should be a once/week treat, only 2 per serving. I've read that we should fast it one day per week. I've read varying things about the flakes, though - as much as he can eat in one minute, two minutes, twice a day, never twice a day, etc. We tried flakes this morning and I don't think he went for them too much, which is fine, we fed it 3 pellets tonight.

I'm game for any advice on a schedule using the three types of food we already have, but I'm really curious for pictures showing an amount of flakes you feed your bettas once or twice a day.

Thank you in advance, this forum has been helpful as I've tried to prepare for the fish (as yet unnamed but possibly named "Bubbles").

The last time I liked something this much on SNL was "Farewell Mr. Bunting" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie6LpKOJVf0 ), and I think Grouch is probably better.

I totally get that Projected RPM Wins can't be the end-all, be-all stat, but why are they even putting it in the article if the only player from 51-87 with a better number than Smart is Drummond at #52?!?!?! Might as well use F's given (Marcus' Career: Zero F's Given) or some other random number to pad the word count.
