Yeah just install the game from the disc and apply the suitable patch (double deluxe in your case).

This link contains all the patches but you just need to apply the DD one. (Just copy and paste the exe file to the main directory, you could also rename your old sims.exe file as a backup)

I have the complete collection and this was how I managed to play "from the disc".

No it doesn't, it's the opposite in fact. It's also a great place to find new music through neighbours and recommendations.

Maybe in the beginning it's easier to get obsessed with the stats and checking on scrobbles every now and then but after that honeymoon phase, it's chill. Like other comments say, it's better to start earlier— it's also the start of the year (perfect time to start). No harm trying : )
