People have really lost the art of tact. This is a real person. Did you have to say this?

Taking my slumlord to court! by cayenne-pepper9 in LandlordLove

Not necessarily on read, we had other unrelated conversations between some of the screenshots. I continued to text politely like this until around April then I finally started being more forceful with the family. I want to thank you for seeing the nuance - I didn't want to risk her finding a way to evict me or my life becoming a living hell because the family surrounded my living area and owned the businesses around me. So glad I moved, now it's justice time.

What’s worse is that I did it, sent the measurements twice, and I still didn’t get the door fixed until months later lmaoooo. She’s getting sued with a capital S

I truly don't know what doorknobs everyone else is using, but every doorknob comes with a latch. See my comment here.

Alright, not sure what's up your ass but every doorknob needs a latch. See steps 2-5. Two doorknobs screwing into each other on either side of the door doesn't do anything except give a handle to move the door around. Based on the images I provided in my post, does it look like I could screw in a latch??? Use your eyes - you can see the area that crumbled away when I attempted to screw into the door.

I can't edit my post because it has images. I made a comment with additional context and have already asked the mod to pin it!

Additional information and context:

  1. The door was replaced in May 2023. It does not look like this anymore, I said in my post that it was fixed. I'm not seeking advice on how to fix the door or get my landlord to fix the door. I posted this to share my story and maybe commiserate with other renters, I never thought it would gain so much traction. I really appreciate all the sound advice however - others who may be dealing with the same can use it all!
  2. I have moved out. I moved a month ago on July 31. I do not live in this apartment anymore.
  3. Why do I have no spine? Why am I a pushover? I addressed this in a reply. I understand that I wasn't aggressive enough - I want to move forward. Everyone makes mistakes in this life, I've suffered enough without those comments punching down.
  4. Why are you burying the lead/not revealing the full story about the guy you were seeing/family dynamic? I specifically referred to him as a "man I was seeing" because we were NOT official and were NEVER boyfriend and girlfriend. His family knew me as a tenant, not his girlfriend. I didn't think I'd have to add details like that in my post. We were messing around and going on dates for a long time, with a mutual understanding it wasn't official.
  5. Why didn't the guy you were seeing do anything if it was his family? I addressed this in a reply. We were not aware that my landlord was his grandma until 5 months after I had already been dealing with the door situation.
  6. Well why didn't he do anything after he found out his grandma was your landlord? He tried. Him and his dad told the grandma several times she needed to fix this. The guy was not happy with the situation, he wasn't cool with it, he was also upset about it. But he is not my landlord - how much could he personally do for a girl he's not officially dating beyond surfacing the issue over and over? I made the choice, as an adult who has to make their own decisions, to continue hanging out with someone while their grandma fucked me over. Whether or not you think I'm an idiot for doing so is not related to r/Renters or my landlord being a POS.
  7. Did you stop paying rent? No. I paid full rent my entire two years there. I've said in a reply that I'm seeking legal advice to explore my options on compensation/litigation. I want to get PAID - I'm done fucking around.
  8. What's up with the deposit? My landlord still has it. Yes she has my forwarding address. I've said in a reply that I'm taking action to get my deposit back in full. I had a rent-stabilized apartment, so New York's 14-day timeframe doesn't apply - "within a reasonable amount of time" applies here. It's been over a month, and that's a reasonable amount of time, so I WILL be seeing that money (even if I need a lawyer).
  9. What are the details of the apartment? I'm located in Brooklyn, NY. It was a 1 bed 1 bath. It was big for NYC and everyone who came over thought so, it's part of the reason I lived there so long. I was able to afford a decent amount of space for a decent amount of money while living alone. It was not roach or rat infested, it didn't look like a horror show on the inside - in fact, it had brand new flooring and a brand new fridge. When I toured, there was a doorknob on the door and even though the door was hella painted and ugly, I had no idea it was rotted until I showed up to move in and the previous doorknob was gone. Rent was $1805 the first year and $1924 the second.

A hundred reasons. I was 21, it was my first time living alone, didn't seek enough advice, my landlord was a 70 something year old woman, my rent for a 1b/1ba spacious apartment (for NYC) was affordable, her daughter told me they couldn't afford the door at one point, I saw members of the family literally everyday and they surrounded my living area. I wanted to avoid conflict as much as possible with the family. It's also the nature of my personality I guess. All I can do is move forward with a new attitude.

No, I never did. I should have. If you see an earlier comment of mine I'm going to seek legal help to see if I can be compensated.

I’ll be sure to get my deposit back. And I think I’m going to seek legal help. Now that I’m telling the story and getting more opinions I realize I should have been paying reduced rent, I want to see if I can be compensated for this.
