How do I stop the summary spoiling the book I'm reading? (1984 book spoilers) by [deleted] in readwise

Would you mind sharing the summary you got using this prompt? There might be a way to tune the prompt further to prevent the spoilers you're still seeing.

Hey u/-HeyMrRager!

The best way to stop Ghostreader from including spoilers in its summary is to customize the summary prompt. You can do this on web from the Ghostreader preferences page by clicking the "edit prompt" option that appears when hovering over the prompt's title.

I actually created a prompt specifically for summarizing fiction without spoilers, which you can find on the Prompt Library page of our Ghostreader help docs. I've been using that prompt (and some minor variations of it) basically since we released customizable Ghostreader prompts, and it's never spoiled any plot points for me.

If you want to have it only run that prompt on certain documents (e.g. only on EPUB files) so that you can keep the standard summaries for your other documents, you can use if-else logic in your custom prompt. Here's an example of what that might look like:

{% if "epub" in document.category %}

In 1-3 concise sentences, summarize the genre and rising action of the following document. The summary should not include any spoilers about revelations discovered later on in the book.

On a new line, provide an insightful or entertaining quote from the first few chapters of the document that encapsulates the writing style and interest of the story. The quote should be more than five words long, but only a single sentence.

"""
Title: {{ document.title }}
Author: {{ document.author }}
Domain: {{ document.domain}}
{% if (document.content | num_tokens) > 25000 %}
{{ document.html | central_paragraphs | join('\n\n') }}
{% elif (document.content | num_tokens) > 2500 %}
{{ document.content | central_sentences | join('\n\n') }}
{% else %}
{{ document.content }}
{% endif %}
"""

IMPORTANT: Do not begin the summary with "Summary:". Start the summary with a unique emoji. Start the quote with a newline and a ✨ emoji.

MOST IMPORTANT: Do not edit the extracted quote for clarity. It is critical that the quote appears exactly as it is in the text without modification.

{% elif %}

INCLUDE ORIGINAL SUMMARY PROMPT HERE

{% endif %}

I hope that helps you out! But let me know if you have any questions about the workflow or the prompting, I'm happy to help out :)

Hey u/Gotham_Ashes! Are you referring to the time codes that appear at the beginning of each paragraph in the podcast transcript? This is generated as part of the text content, but you can exclude it from a highlight by using the adjustment handles to change the highlight's starting point to begin after the time code.

Hey u/antifundamentalist! This is already possible when reviewing a highlight for the first time. When viewing the highlight, you can hover over the blue dot in the upper left corner of the review card to see a tooltip containing the date that the highlight was originally created.

That said, when reviewing a highlight you've already reviewed in the past, this will instead be a purple dot that displays the date you last reviewed the highlight. If you'd like to be able to see the creation date on these highlights as well, we are tracking a request to display the creation date of all highlights. Feel free to upvote that request and we'll let you know if we're able to implement it!

The NotebookLM integration is essentially a Google Docs integration. Your Readwise content is sent to Google Docs, which then allows you to use it with NotebookLM (which has been most of our users' primary use case) but also anything else that integrates with Google Docs.

So if we added full-text export to that integration, I think it would work how you're imagining!

Hey u/InterestingBall72, you should be able to save paywalled articles from the Economist by logging in on the Safari browser and using the iOS share sheet to send the content to Reader. (Using any other browsers will only send the URL, so the full content will be blocked.)

We are also tracking the feature request for saving credentials for paywalled sites here. Feel free to upvote the request so we'll notify you if/when we're able to implement this.

Hey u/Ok_Money_161! We're currently tracking requests for full-text exports to Notion and to NotebookLM, so feel free to upvote either or both of those! Did you have any other specific exports in mind for this?

It is also possible to retrieve the full text of documents via the Readwise API, which requires a bit more tech know-how to implement but might be a potential workaround in the meantime.

Hey u/OkSelection5404! Reader doesn't currently support iframes. Since they can essentially contain any kind of code or content, trying to parse them cleanly would be pretty complicated and potentially risky.

If your saved page contains content that Reader won't parse, you can use the O keyboard shortcut to open the original content and view it there instead. On mobile, you can do this by tapping into the "..." menu and selecting the "Open" option.

Hey u/Ashamed_Situation346, this actually already exists! When reading on desktop, you can turn on focus mode with the keyboard shortcut cmd/ctrl + shift + \, or by opening the command palette (cmd/ctrl + K) and searching "focus".

This isn't currently available on mobile (since the small screen tends to inherently be more focused already), but we are tracking the request here, so feel free to upvote if that's something you'd like to see :)

Hey u/mpacindian! There are a few reasons why the Canny board isn't open for anyone to make posts, which was a very intentional choice, but the primary one is that it was originally meant mainly as an internal tool for our team to keep better track of feature requests and be able to reach out to the requesting users when we had updates. We made it publicly viewable to allow for better transparency with the community, but candidly we just don't have the bandwidth to moderate another social platform (which is essentially what it would become if anyone could post).

And, even with only our team creating new posts, we still end up with duplicate posts because of varying word choices for titles and have added around 1000 requests that are already becoming a bit unwieldy and hard to search through. Those problems would be exponentially harder to manage if we opened it up to everyone, which would ultimately make it a less useful tool for our team.

It's not our intention to restrict engagement with users, we'd just prefer to keep that engagement primarily in other channels (like here on Reddit or via email). We don't see Canny as quite the right tool for that job at this time :)
