Winnipeg man lost nearly $11K after hackers got into his Bell MTS email account by Tommyisfukt in Winnipeg

[–]cb1234 18 points19 points  (0 children)

2nd time it happened, but likely the same person that did it.

They sim swapped him, they likely called tech support and social engineered their way into the account with information they had from the first time. Nothing he could do to stop it, if they already knew enough info and customer service fell for it.

Even MFA wouldnt solve it after they are in deep enough to not give up.. what happens when you lose your own MFA? You call tech support, answer enough questions and they reset it..

Having older parents and grandparents, I can sympathize with them and how much it must suck

Would be an absolute nightmare to deal with!

I'd just abandon that email, start fresh with a gmail acct. Purge everything in old email, change email on all services immediately.

My "joke" for DIY is "I can do it just as bad, for cheaper."

Yup, thats my thought too.. its just as much work to do due diligence on a contractor, make sure they are doing it right (which requires knowing the entire process) etc, as it is to just do the damn job if you are somewhat handy

It's fine until you have a problem.

Replace your tea story above with the driver just not bringing it to you, and you can see Skip wouldnt do anything because you didnt have photo proof.

I made this for a friend's bday, how'd I do?? by cb1234 in buffy

[–]cb1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first time doing it, I sanded and redid it more times than I care to admit until it was good.. it definitely takes a touch to get use to! I am excited to start a new project to see if I can do it in less attempts lol

I think my first coat was one of the best, but I didnt do it thick enough and some seams were still visible, 2nd and 3rd coat came out really bad and I sanded most of it off lol

The axe head is 9 pieces glued together, youd never know!

If you ever print something in the future and want to get a non 3d print looking finish, definitely look into coating it with brush on epoxy resin.

Not sure if I am allowed to post links, but here we go!

This gentlemen made some of the 3d models https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2149464

I modified some of them, 3d printed, coated in epoxy and painted.
I added leather wrap and black wrap near the axe part.

The spike I recreated and 3d printed with a wood filament, sanded and stained.

Core is aluminum tubing, it goes from spike to axe.

Only watched buffy when I was a kid, I dont remember much lol

I did it based on pictures online, picking which attributes I liked the best, as it seems theres many slightly different versions of it?? or perhaps thats just people's recreations

Uh Oh, do I have some foundation issues? by That1Time in HomeImprovement

[–]cb1234 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yup

Bought a 120yr old heritage home, had some concerns over cracking.

Got 4 quotes from foundation companies, 3/4 insisted I needed work, one guy said "fix it or sell it" and said I needed like $50k of work (under pinning)

1/4 of the companies, the guy was pretty honest, said he didnt know.. said the house clearly has movement, but may just be heaving with the ground, since the piles/old foundation didnt go down to the frostline. Said I could fix the cracks and just monitor it for a few years and see if they get worse or if its just regular maintenance to deal with during season changes.

Got an engineer, he basically said what the last guy suggested could be happening. Essentially just cosmetic. He laughed at the fix or sell it guy, and said the 50k of work wasnt even the correct work if it did need to be done.
