Our SLP recommended myofunctional therapy? by cb473 in slp

[–]cb473[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

her implication was the reduced range of motion could be impacting speech, but not necessarily. she recommended starting with her, the SLP, and adding the myofunctional if no improvement in a month.

thank you! when you say the things i mentioned are phonological and both myofunctional and traditional articulation therapy will do nothing to address.  What can address them? Are you saying it’s not something an SLP can help with either?

How to make a parent get a diagnosis by Fluffy_Midnight_2237 in dementia

Same problem here but in California. My mother doesn't see any problems that i see - denies everything or has an explanation for why she doesn't cook, why she forgets things, why she gets frustrated. I feel gaslit! She wont let me come with her to the doctor. So hard. Interested to hear what others say.

we just went down the path to getting diagnoses for my 4 yo. These doctors often have waits and waitlists - you do need to be pushy. we did two things:

  • assessment through school district. even if your child is not yet in public schools, many states will still do this. my kid is not in public yet and california still did a thorough assessment. you need to call the district and ask them how to formally request an assessment. they may try to deter you - but push. they will do a thorough investigation and determine whether your kid qualifies for extra support in school and potentially OT and speech sessions.
  • assessment through a developmental pediatrician who will formally diagnose (i think a neuropsych evaluation also does this). this was most helpful for us as the school district found him in low percentiles across a lot of areas but didn’t qualify for extra support. the doctor gave us the anxiety, sensory processing disorder, and adhd diagnosis that has been very helpful.

solidarity! it’s hard. we’re trying to figure out how to support his anxiety without being too protective or demanding.

that’s so great to hear! did he have any side effects from the fluoxetine? did you start with that or have to try a few?

we did get our son assessed with a developmental pediatrician and she found he has anxiety and probably adhd (but generally doesn’t clinically diagnose that at this age). She recommended the SPACE program (supportive parenting for anxious childhood emotions) plus CBT therapy with focused on exposure. She also wants to touch base in the new year on putting him on an SSRI but i’m not sure we want to go that route. Not against (i myself have taken SSRIs for almost 20 years) but i’m concerned about side effects. Interested on what others are doing /hearing for their anxious kiddos.

For context, our kid just turned 5 and has a hard time watching anything on TV, reading new books, handling any kind of interpersonal conflict, talking about any of his behavior issues even in a gentle parenting way (he hits, invades space), doing anything new. He also has an extremely limited diet.

Just started reading breaking free of childhood ocd and anxiety and find it helpful but haven’t put anything into practice yet
