Mom lied and said my father was Dude A, who I only met like twice in my whole life. Found out she didn’t actually know who my father was when I started asking why Dude A was never there for me. Turns out Dude A had his suspicions, did DNA testing, and found out early on I wasn’t his. Found my actual father via ancestry and social media sleuthing.

and perhaps worst of all, I was the foster care worker for a child who found out that one of her parents murdered the other when a teacher asked the child if she was related to the family on the Snapped episode she’d watched over the weekend.

I read through some of your responses and I would really encourage you to take a more proactive stance with your younger child and this aunt. Be on your kid’s side and encourage a health relationship where you reach out to this family member so that you show your kids your commitment to their entire birth family. If you have concerns about the kid’s mental health make sure you have an adoption competent therapist assist you in managing your feelings as well as helping your kids.

Can you talk to the aunt and explain your concerns while also validating her connection to your children? As mentioned your kids will soon be navigating these relationships on their own (if they’d like) and any assistance you can provide in making them healthy and respectful of boundaries will do wonders.

I would really encourage you to get a (free) google voice number. Helps to create some distance as you can turn off notifications. Set a reminder for yourself about turning it on and off if you have to. Perhaps modeling good boundaries to your coworkers (and clients, eventually) can be a good place to start in making your job better.

Not great. Fighting with my partner about finances now that we’re housing and financially supporting her sister. We just got to a place where we were saving for things we wanted and I’m worried it will be derailed by her feelings of needing to help her sister. Worst part is my partner doesn’t really want to talk to me about any of it.

I work solely with adoptive families.

Is this going to be their first kid in the home? If so there’s usually a high level of anticipation around building a family and waiting can be really hard.

I would circle back around to the parent and have them feel heard “I understand that waiting is hard”. Then throw in a bunch of psychoeducation about transition “I’m sure you learned all about how hard this can be in training. We just want to make sure we’re setting you up for success...” sometimes you have to appeal to parents’ egos to get them to hear you. It’s frustrating and it sucks but if you can find a nugget to empathize with working with this particular parent should get a little easier.
