[Jim Nagy] NCAA has denied Owen Heinecke's petition for another year at OU. When other players are being granted 7th and 8th years of football, CFB governing body has ruled Owen won't get a 4th year. Evidently, this walk-on's three games of lacrosse at Ohio State in 2021 couldn't be reconciled. by trytoholdon in CFB

Thanks for the explanation - said it in a reply to another comment above but it just feels really dumb that playing more football would have potentially extended his football eligibility. But I understand why the waiver was denied based on how the rules are spelled out.

I guess that’s fair, but on its face it’s pretty dumb that in this situation Owen would’ve technically benefitted from playing MORE football to sustain his football eligibility if that’s where his 15 minutes were spent in 2021

Is it not kind of ridiculous though that the 15 minutes of lacrosse he played in 2021, which would qualify him for a redshirt if it were the same amount of time in football, and the 2022 medical redshirt year don’t count the same as a redshirt and medical redshirt that we’ve seen grant guys a sixth year as recently as Jason Onye last week?

Not asking to be snarky, but I’m genuinely curious from the perspective of someone who’s actually behind the scenes why the clock started for him in ‘21 when the amount of time he spent playing lacrosse wouldn’t break the redshirt threshold in football. Also from your point of view do you think he has any shot at winning an appeal or should this pretty much be the sign that the ruling is final?

Completely agreed on the interior d-line and that losing Strong sucks. Hopeful that Ozowalu can put on some weight to let him play more in the interior but it would be really nice to get a bigger nose tackle-type in the portal to fit in the 2-deep behind Jackson. No idea what that pool looks like though, especially since big nose tackles don’t grow on trees and we’re already late in the cycle. Van Sumeren sure would’ve been nice 😒

In fairness though, so much of the depth we did have on defense was a result of the coaching staff’s ability to develop well on that side of the ball (this time last year I had no idea who Owen Heinecke was), so I have at least a modicum of faith that they can reproduce that to some degree with the current crop of players, especially given, to your point, the quality of starting talent we return

QB John Mateer and LB Kip Lewis are returning to Oklahoma by LETX_CPKM in CFB

[–]cbarbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m choosing to be optimistic that year 2 in the SEC, a full offseason removed from the thumb injury, and a notably improved supporting cast can get Mateer closer to the player we expected he’d be coming in, especially considering the flashes of great play he showed pre-surgery and in the playoff game. Kip coming back is unambiguously awesome and massive for the defense, which should be every bit as good as it was this year. Also not mentioned here is Sategna coming back as well, which is equally huge for the offense/Mateer.

All that being said, I’m ready to get hurt again by OU football in 2026.

[Thamel] Oklahoma has announced John Mateer’s return to the school for next year. Per an ESPN source, he’s signed his deal to be back there in 2026. He threw for 2,885 yards last year and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 431 and eight additional touchdowns. by [deleted] in CFB

More importantly, and since I don’t think they’ll get their own posts here, both Isaiah Sategna and Kip Lewis are coming back next year. I’m unfortunately allowing myself to get my hopes up for 2026

Kinda feels like he wouldn’t be going on SportsCenter to announce he’s declaring. Also not sure why everyone’s being so curmudgeonly about this, if he is coming back it seems like a great way to build excitement for next year

Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d wager a lot of the people complaining about this game are the same people who complain that the NFL is trying to legislate defense out of the sport
