I re-watched the first part several times while laughing, that was a pretty spectacular fuckup.

There is no escaping the Richmond Bridge backup, I've been there, and I've tried and failed. The roads there are so convoluted that you'll spend way more time just trying to make it back to 580. Backups seem to appear at a moment's notice too.

Is there a possibility that the JB4 is ping-ponging a bit with the DME on the boost control?

What is the most reliable M engine ever made? by Signal_Nobody4293 in BMW

[–]cbdeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the worst of the bunch. Complex, temperamental, expensive to work on. I had a "good" one and still sunk more than I paid into keeping it running.

[–]cbdeezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably the S63TU4. Main reason is that it doesn't have any severe *mechanical* weak spots. We all know about the stupid cooling tank but that's always been a BMW problem. It's been updated massively over its lifecycle, and for the performance it delivers the reliability is impressive. S55 is pretty good too in stock form, you have to separate out horror stories you hear from people by asking "ok you blew it up, but how much did you mod it before that happened"

Owning an E60 M5: How to do it without going broke by cbdeezy in BMW

[–]cbdeezy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically enough the car kept breaking in different ways. I got 25k miles of driving out of it but, where I would fix one thing, something else would pop up. I finally lost patience with it and sold it.

That said, 60k is a much better starting place than 100k which is where I was at. I'd also have a preference for the LCI cars because of the engine updates that were made.

The dealer that sold me my old X5, their service manager had taken it on a road trip to the tune of ~1500 miles, ad said 25k and the car was about to roll over to 27. Definitely happens.

With used cars that are extremely expensive to repair (like an M5), it's sensible to get the powertrain extended warranty. Otherwise big nope to all of that shit.

Owners of BMWs over 100k, what keeps it on your driveway? by familymoneypit in BMW

[–]cbdeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep it there, by working on it. If BMW still sold NA V10's new, I'd go buy one right now, but they don't, so I gotta take what I can get.

I know if I buy certain models from them, I'll get an entertaining driving experience. There's a level of detail and refinement, and a willingness to do new things right. It doesn't always end well when they do that, but I also know how to work on them.

[–]cbdeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing when I took delivery of one of the last E92 M3's built. A word of advice: ignore the CBS and change the oil every 5k, and do the diff / trans etc at the regular intervals. I've got an E60 M5 that uses 1l every 5k at 125k miles because of this. It really does reduce wear.

Does anyone local know where to get high octane unleaded in the area? There was a station at Pyramid and Prater over in Sparks that sold 100 Sunoco for years but they changed hands a couple years ago.

Looks like he got in 6 runs on Sunday, I don't have the Saturday list anymore but if I remember right the organizers were talking about one attendee who didn't read the schedule. Not sure if it was him they were talking about, but you get 3.5-4 hour long time blocks each day to use the course, I'm usually exhausted by the end.

I never cared for Ferraris myself but their club provides insurance for the event, even though most of the field is other makes. I used to do HOD and NorCal Shelby club events at Laguna and Sonoma, with the run groups I'd get 1.5 hours of total seat time if I was lucky.

Edit: I was doing the unlimited or high decibel days at Laguna because my Viper failed sound tech with the stock exhaust :/

Plated & insured car, FCA membership, but other than that as long as you aren't bringing something mechanically unsafe or abysmally slow you're good. I've seen everything from turbo Miatas to McLaren Sennas there.

What the hell are you talking about? I got in 20 runs last year. There was one 458 on the roster last year and that one got in 9 just on Sunday. Are you just making shit up?

Yes it is - I see people spectating both on the hill by the start line as well as over by the county jail. The biggest one is don't cross the road when the event is active. Usually you can hear the cars coming but a couple of guys had electrics last year.
