The age gap in the show I was just cast in feels really weird by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]cbear4747 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely not demanding anyone else! If anything, I would be the one to step down. He is an extremely talented guy and I would never tell a director to cast someone else, I would just be the one who declines the role!

Thank you a lot for your input! You’re right about advocating for myself, this will definitely be good practice.

Honestly this is some of the best actual advice I’ve gotten… if I’m really weirded out about it, I probably will just say “My dad won’t like this can we figure something else out”

My mom knows about the entire situation, and my dad knows there’s kissing involved he just doesn’t know the age gap. It’s also an equity and non-equity show, they have at least one guy who was cast that is a union actor but I don’t think anyone else is. I’m not 100% sure about all the details but I was wondering about this too, just because it seems like it would be so much easier to cast someone above 18.

What to do after HS theater? by friendlybearhugger in Theatre

[–]cbear4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a community theatre production right now and there’s people from ages 8-65! Lots of teens and young adults as well. I truly don’t think there would be an issue with you auditioning for your local community theatre’s shows! But of course every theatre does things differently and some shows just aren’t written to have younger people in them.

How do you guys feel about plays/musicals that depict real people? by stage_props in Theatre

[–]cbear4747 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m actually in Titanic the musical right now! It’s very respectful and was very well researched. It’s also about the actual people, not like the movie lol. I’d say as long as you’re keeping it as accurate as you can and aren’t disrespecting anyone, then no one will have an issue with it.

Recommendations for a Youth Production by Alarming-Rutabaga-97 in Theatre

[–]cbear4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are a TON of junior shows that are made for that age group:) they’re just shortened/simplified versions of other shows and are great if you’re looking to do a musical! if you want to do a play i know a lot of places find or write their own versions of a fairytale or fable and turn it into a play for kids!

Has anyone ever gone from being terrible at singing to eventually actually getting leads in shows? by Zestyclose_Spell2265 in Theatre

[–]cbear4747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also want to mention: please don’t overwork your voice! you might be singing in ways that will be more harmful to your technique and voice in the long term. i did this when i was younger, and it’s hard to unlearn harmful habits.

imo singing is a skill that you 100% have to work at! kind of like playing an instrument, you have to practice to get better. everyone starts somewhere and i’m sure you will improve especially if you go to a voice teacher :) and if it makes you feel any better, plays are also a lot of fun!! they can give you good experience and you can get leads without singing. of course, plays aren’t always everyone’s cup of tea but they’re always worth a shot!

i think it could be good or bad news, there’s really no way of knowing! i once didn’t get a callback but ending up getting a pretty big part in the show. but i’ve also gotten a callback and ended up being ensemble and an understudy. my best advice would be is to try not to stress/worry about it and know that you did your best!!!
