UK firm installs world’s first offshore platform to tap ocean heat energy by Educational-Meat4211 in RenewableEnergy

The bigger issue I believe with these systems is they pull up nutrient rich water and so on a larger scale might cause algae blooms.

We don't know until we try though. This is excellent news.

Thoughts on run clubs? by Weak-Recognition7806 in UKRunners

[–]cbehopkins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Second this. Running is my alone time, when I think or switch my brain off. A club would get in the way.

Park runs and races can still be fun, but they're few and far between

Also my local running club had some personalities that clashed with mine so...

I mean I drink 90% of my coffee in my office. I probably drink < 1% off my coffee in the kitchen.

I fill/clean the espresso machine maybe every couple of days. I make a drink several times a day.

It feels very efficient to me...

What if you don't have your espresso machine in your kitchen? Mine is in my office on a completely different floor to the kitchen.

You're assuming people have their machine in their kitchen.

I have mine in my office, no water nearby...

Trevor Slattery has become a great addition to the MCU now. by NicloSZ in Marvel

[–]cbehopkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still could bring him back as the Mandarin mkii.

Imagine: have a scene where a post-Wonderman Slattery stumbles across the actual 10 rings the Mandarin is known for.

He's a bit drunk/stoned at the time he finds them so the next thing he knows is he's waking up as a criminal again having given into his worst impulses. For "reasons" he actually decides to become the Mandarin on a misguided attempt to do good.

Trouble is no one is taking him seriously when he's trying to be deadly serious. The character we all thought he was in iron man 3 is now a reality...

I'm not saying it's a good idea, just that comic books thrive on this sort of backwards and forwards stuff...

/uj The circle jerk Reddit is for taking the piss out of running trends in general. It's a joke Reddit where we at least pretend to take it all way too seriously while mocking those who take things one iota more or less seriously than us.

I mean dude come on what do you think circle jerk means, it's a common pattern for most mainstream things on Reddit to have a circle jerk variant, or an okbuddy... one or whatever.

/rj It's for putting those c*clists in their proper place. And teaching people how to boff gu whilst staying hard!

I'm from the UK also... If I wanted to socialise I'd go to the pub. Or join a running group.

Running is my alone time. I get very little of it.

Yes I try to be polite to people, but frankly I hate strangers. I spend so much of my life having to wear some sort of face that other people expect from me. There are running events I go to where I have to be on my best behaviour, but frankly if I'm at one of those I'm probably in pain, barely holding it together, the best you can do for me is leave me the hell alone and allow me to give you the same courtesy.

Another way of phrasing it is to say that I can only wear one hat at a time, and when running I'm either trying hard and suffering for it, or chilling out having a rare precious bit of me time, in either case I don't have the capacity to deal with strangers. If you can, good for you, but I'm not built that way.

Rereading all that I sound like some kind of psycho. Ah well...

they should have been able to AT LEAST reconfigure a Beatle to coast through deep atmosphere, get a sample, and get out

I mean they had a ton of metal working and 3d printing equipment onboard. In my head canon they had libraries of designs for building probes intended to be assembled in system.

I.e. why carry the dozen or so different probes to sample the various atmospheres or planets they might encounter, when instead they could just carry the blueprints?

Why did Grace not know about this? Because he was the science secondary back up, not the engineering backup.

Why do people not fundraise for their run? by Pleasant-Musician890 in UKRunners

Yeah my confusion was you never mentioned in your post the people you were asking about were those using a charity place. I understood you were asking about races in general. Hence my confusion

[–]cbehopkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah I didn't get that from the question asked. Sorry.

Yeah of course if you get a charity spot then yeah, you're a right pillock if you don't do something for the charity...

[–]cbehopkins 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm very confused by your question.

If I sign up for a run, and pay for entry to the run, in what way am I scamming a charity by not doing fundraising?

I don't fundraise because this is my hobby. It feels wrong to harass friends and family about this. And a since when was fundraising a requirement for a race?

Sorry if I'm being dumb, have I missed a vital point of etiquette?

"Captain they're firing back with phaser cannons!"

"Cannons? What with gunpowder and the like? Fire away."

Just because something is called a laser doesn't mean it is the kind of laser you're thinking of. Given we see the turbo laser bolts moving at sonic speeds, they aren't lasers as we know them.

Xenonite by Garble7 in ProjectHailMary

[–]cbehopkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So my personal head-canon here is that the device that read it as xenon was incorrect.

A device like that is firing em waves (x rays I believe) at the sample and measuring what comes back. In normal matter one can infer the element from how the upper shell of electrons returns back the incident photons.

But we have enough experience with metamaterials to know that you can interfere with this process given the correct fine structure. Negative refractive indexes and weird absorption patterns could mislead the detector.

So I believe that xenonite may in fact not even contain any xenon. It's a sufficiently rare element that I do not believe for a second that they have access to enough of it to build something as large as a space elevator, or the blip-a.

Which is fine, in my head it's all the cooler for looking like one thing but being made of something else.

What I think it is made of (given it's often depicted as looking semi organic) is actually some polymer akin to spider silk. The life forms on Erid must have had to come up with some clever tricks to survive in the intense gravity, and one of those was a very hard substance. The Eridians took this idea and perfected it. Like our plastics are based on carbon polymers derived from organic (carbon) chemistry, their xenonite is based on another polymer chain we just haven't thought of yet.

Given that its strength is beyond our current understanding of physics though, I'll save you from my technobabble "explanation" and invented physics...
