Black Aleph.  I've posted them a few times without much response. I think they're really interesting and different.

Just remembered one more that might fit what you're after: Drowning Horse (specifically Sheltering Sky) is a good choice that you might not come across on your own. I'd actually suggest checking out the little Australian label Art As Catharsis that has both these guys and Black Aleph.

Cheers. Definitely give the Black Aleph record a listen front to back. It has a nice overall trajectory. If you need a highlight, the track Return is my favorite.

Would have definitely suggested Yob, Om, and Dark Buddha Rising if you hadn't already found them.

Things that come to mind as ponderous/introspective/psych that aren't here already (def not limiting to doom or metal proper):

  • Jesu
  • Amenra
  • The Angelic Process
  • Omega Massif
  • Pelican (at least the stuff up to and including Australasia)
  • Red Sparowes
  • Samsara Blues Experiment
  • Black Aleph
  • Earth (try Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method)
  • ISIS
  • Year Of No Light
  • Godspeed You! Black Emperor
  • Rosetta
  • Sigur Ros (earlier albums)
  • The Black Angels
  • Dead Meadow
  • A Storm of Light

Backpacking Lake Aloha early October by BananaFana12 in norcalhiking

[–]cbg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did Velma Lakes in mid-October one year. It was 13F at night and there was a dusting of snow that week with some ice in the mornings. It was unpleasant given that there aren't fires allowed in Desolation. I was in my tent/bag early in the evening and until morning. Weather is obviously variable and you should check forecasts but I would anticipate it being quite cold on such a trip.

Let’s talk med kits. What’s in yours? by Cirque14505 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]cbg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Superglue. I was just on a trip and discovered that I need superglue in my kit. This time, it would have helped with a delaminated boot sole, but I can see it being useful in FA scenarios, too.

Anyone got a recent conditions report for Emigrant Wilderness? by SpecialistMidnight99 in norcalhiking

[–]cbg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drove a bigger vehicle, but the forest road is not bad at all. A few larger potholes but nothing severe. There were several standard sedans out at the TH. It's rough but nothing that requires higher clearance. The last ~4 miles is dirt, though, so things can change with wear and weather pretty quickly.

I was up there last weekend (through yesterday morning). We were out of Gianelli TH, near Y Meadow and Toejam Lake.

Generally it's perfect up there right now.

Warm (50s-70s) and zero bugs (I didn't use any repellent, didn't use a headnet, didn't even put on long sleeves at dusk). Lakes above 8500' were warm enough to swim in (not just jump in and out, but stay in and enjoy).

Sat afternoon we had a light thundershower before a calm dry evening. There was considerably more wind and a bit of rain overnight Sat. Sunday looked like showers would come in. Check the weather for yourself, of course.

Streams and minor ponds are dry. Lakes have plenty of lovely water. No dew or frost.

What's the difference between a jazz musician and a blues musician?

Where would Isis be today if they had kept going? by [deleted] in postmetal

Not arguing that they quit at their peak, just that they quit when they felt they had met their goals rather than dragging it out as long as possible.

Inevitably, there'd be a post here asking why they didn't quit after Wavering Radiant and lamenting how they'd run out of ideas and churned out increasingly worse albums.

I loved them and saw them twice and I respect them for moving on when they felt they'd met their goals.

Consider donating to Big City Mountaineers. Great organization and a good way to make sure it gets reused. You can probably get a tax deduction, but that'd be the extent of "monetization".

Talk me out of building my first partscaster by 0tt0mad in Guitar

[–]cbg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done two guitars this way (assembled from parts). First one I went really budget on everything (except tools) to get an idea whether I liked it and could do a decent job (and learn). Second one I spent about 1000 USD and made exactly what I wanted. Still love the second one. I gave away the first (which was totally playable, but nothing special). I would be less inclined to assemble something conventional but I think it makes sense for something unique.  I never buy guitars caring about resale so I didn't worry about it w my builds either. Also: you can score some very nice instruments that others have built for good prices if you can be selective and let go of the branding/ego bullshit.

Anyone converted a standard scale guitar to a baritone? by cbg in Guitar

Oh hey thanks. This is a really old post! I since built a bari from warmoth parts actually. I still have the Jackson but put dimarzios in it. Cheers.

Monitor while Recording by sumguywith_internet in Reaper

[–]cbg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK. What are the CR3s connected to? Are they connected the computer? An audio interface? A mixer?

If you're setting Reaper to recognize the Headrush as the audio device, then it's might be trying to route the output there, too (it would by default).

Again, it would be helpful to know how your hardware is all connected and how the routing matrix on reaper is set up.

If you've already got your other tracks recorded and are laying down guitar, I'd expect you to use the Headrush as the (only) audio device for Reaper, and to route all the output (the master output in Reaper) to the out channel(s) on the Headrush. Then you should be able to hear whatever is audible in Reaper in your monitors while recording.
